Halloween is approaching ~ What Scares Your Shifters?

The Trickster by J. W. Baker

WHAT SCARES YOUR SHIFTERS?

By Pat Cunningham

With Halloween approaching, the question arises: mere mortals quake at the thought of the supernatural, but what do supernatural beings fear (other than Buffy and the Winchester boys)? Let’s ask …

VAMPIRE – Well, that’s a no-brainer. Sunlight. Crosses, garlic, holy water, even stakes, we can deal with that. You can come back from those. Sunlight, though, that’s pretty final. It’s like that line from Terminator 2: you get caught out after dawn, and anybody not wearing two million sunblock is gonna have a really bad day. We can move around when it’s cloudy, but that’s chancy. If you’re a weatherman, you’d better get the forecast right or we’re coming after you. Well, those of us who are left.

WOLF – Our biggest fear has to be the safety of the pack. Guns, diseases, threats from humans, protecting your mate, challenges from other wolves – we worry constantly. Look at me, I’m shedding just thinking about it. My personal fear is leg traps. My uncle lost a hand in one. When I go to a park or the State Game Lands, I stay on the paths. Better safe than sorry.

CAT – Werewolves, the big bullies. They’re always chasing me. I end up climbing a tree, which is a mistake because I’m afraid of heights and I always get stuck on a branch. One time I was so scared I shifted up there. There I was, stark naked, stuck in a tree and crying my eyes out, all because of some nasty wolf. What? Oh, the fire department got me down. Six companies showed up. They were all so nice about it. And cute. I like firemen.

HORSE – Spurs. Spurs and bits. I don’t go in for pain. Some of us are into the whole S&M scene – saddles, whips, reins, tight cinches – but not me. I don’t ride that trail. I like a rider with a good seat and a firm hand who’ll give me a rubdown afterwards. Now that’s heaven.

JAGUAR – What do we fear? Pah! We are jaguars. We fear nothing. We are kings of the jungle. I will admit to some unease regarding snakes. The way they slither, that legless undulation, it is – creepy? Yes, that is the word. But fear, no. We need fear nothing with these claws. Ah, little gatita, I see you admiring my claws. Come here, come sit beside me. I will drive the big bad wolves away. You like the firemen? Smile, and I will be on fire for you. You make such a lovely purr.

COYOTE – I was dating this girl, another coyote, she knew positions even I never heard of, but anyway, everything was cool until one day she starts using words like “marriage” and “puppies” and telling me I should get a job. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough. Scariest thing that ever happened to me.

GIRAFFE – Power lines. You can get tangled up in those buggers for days.

So, what are your shifters afraid of? Let’s hear from them.

Wednesday's Words for October 28, 2009

If you’ve ever wondered if there’s a limit to the degree to which I’m willing to embarrass myself in order to share in these essays, the answer is probably no.

Years ago, when the kids were small, we had an electric can opener. I do recall this device, because we had a couple of cats at the time, and every time I would open peas or corn for dinner, they thought it was their food being opened.

My memory isn’t what it used to be, but I think I remember that it was white, had a flip type lever at the top, so that you held the can close, flipped the lever toward yourself—locking the can in place—then pressed down on the lever which operated the thing.

I understand the basic mechanics and the principle of electric can openers and no, it’s not rocket science.

Well, what with one thing and another that can opener eventually went to the great gadget garden in the sky. Times were tough (trust me on this; for the Ashburys, times have almost always been tough) so we bought a manual opener, which worked well for several years until it broke, at which time we bought another manual opener.

About a month ago, I was riding around Walmart (my beloved convinced me that I should use the electric cart since the doctor told me walking was a very bad idea for me until my knee heals). We had our two usual grandchildren with us. The kids thought it was a hoot, granny on this electric cart. They wanted to try it out, of course. They settled for hanging on to the back of it and trotting after me.

We all had a good time, and I got to see more things than usual, as my legs weren’t getting sore. And one of the things I saw, for under ten dollars, was an electric can opener. My current manual opener was beginning to drop the cans in mid-open, and I knew it would soon need to be replaced.

So I put this electric gadget in the basket attached to my cart.

That evening, as I was preparing dinner, I thought I would try out my brand new, time-and-labor saving device.

Do you think I could get that thing to work?

I tried. About ten times. I even got out the directions. I read them. Rather, I looked at the pictures that someone who was a frustrated neo-impressionist had drawn as directions. I couldn’t understand them. I already knew the can went upright and close to the top. Tell me more!

But the directions didn’t, and I could not get that can opener to work.

I was pretty sure the fault lay with the user, and not the device. Every once in a while that which should be simple somehow confounds the heck out of me. I know part of the problem has to do with the fact that I am getting older. Hand-eye-brain co-ordination begins to go out of whack somewhere around the age of fifty. At least for me it did.

That’s one of the reasons I’m so slow to learn all the little do-hickeys and thing-a-ma-jigs on my cell phone; why I still don’t know all the settings on the digital camera I’ve had two years; why I have only in the last little while learned how to pause live TV and why even now, if the kids make a mistake with the universal controller for the television-cable-DVD, I have to wait for either my beloved to get home or my daughter to come over before I can watch the tube again.

And no, more than a month later, I still have not been able to operate that darn can opener.

Meanwhile, just the other day, I was at my desk, working away when my fifteen year old grandson came over to visit. His first words, as ever, were “Can I make something to eat?” “Sure,” I replied, “help yourself.”

“Oh, you have a new electric can opener,” he said. I wasn’t surprised he’d only just seen the device for the first time. Yes, it had sat right there on the counter for more than a month but he is, after all, male. “I do,” I replied, even as I hoped he wouldn’t ask me to show him how it worked. One thing I could do without was being teased by my teenaged grandson.

Not teased, but definitely embarrassed. For just then I heard it. The unmistakeable sound of the-you-know-what as he opened a can of spaghetti.

Love,
Morgan

Sharing Brenda by Laura Ashton

Sharing Brenda by Laura Ashton
Publisher: Siren-Bookstrand
Genre: Erotic Ménage M/F/M

Disclosure: Review Copy Received from Publisher

Summary: Brenda has been through enough relationship drama. After her husband was caught cheating at their wedding, she decides it's time to start over. Brenda leaves her fast-paced city life behind to start over on a ranch in east Texas.

Part of her fresh start comes in the form of ranch hand Billy Joe Watkins. Brenda's taken with his gentlemanly, handsome ways. When she meets his good friend and fellow ranch hand, Salvador Rivas, the next day, sparks fly with his overly seductive nature.

Both admit to being ladies men, but claim their attraction and feelings for Brenda are sincere. They say they will do whatever it takes to prove to her they're in it for the long haul. Can Billy and Sal be trusted? More importantly, can Brenda learn to love again so quickly and easily?

Amanda's Review: Sharing Brenda starts out where Jasmine’s Urban Cowboys leaves off, and as I have stated before, Brenda was the reality check that Jaz’s story needed. I can now say it continues into Ms. Ashton’s sequel.

Last time we saw Brenda she was about to make the biggest mistake of her life, she was going to marry Kerry. Even though her friends and everyone around her told her not too, she pushed forward, hoping it would get better. It only got worse. With Annulment on her mind she sets out to change her life for the better!

Sharing Brenda is nothing like the first book; where Jasmine’s Urban Cowboys is hot and heavy from the beginning, Brenda takes her time, making sure having a threesome and a relationship with two men is something she wants, and something that might take her life in the right direction.

I loved Ted and Gregg in the first book, but I didn’t like Sal in this story. I found him way too pushy and overbearing. There is a fine line between being an Alpha and just being a jerk, and yeah, to this reader, Sal falls in the jerk column.

I believe Brenda would have been happy with just Billy. He was the one who looked out for her, and he was the one who defended her. I found the way he protected and took care of her sweet and kind. I would have to say I would rather have a Billy in my life than a Sal. But that is just my personal opinion.

The sex in Sharing Brenda was just as good and just as HAWT as Jasmine’s Urban Cowboys. It leaves you craving more and turning the pages slower as every word seeps into your consciousness. The visuals are stunning and I love how Ms. Ashton leaves her stories open for another installment. Which this reviewer is hoping will happen sometime soon. LOL!!!

So peeps, if you are looking for another sizzling story from Ms. Ashton, Sharing Brenda is the book to read!

Rated 5 Delightful Divas and a Recommended Read by Amanda!

DEMON LOVERS -

Hadn’t know I’d created one until I read the new December
Realms of Fantasy magazine. There’s a great article by SatyrPhil Brucato, and isn’t that a great name? He traces demon lovers from historical figures to modern fiction, Lord Byron to Edward Cullen. Easy to recognize Graham in Deja Vu Lover fitting right in with that group.

The fifth MUDFLAT book, my current work-in-progress, also has a demon lover, and this time I knew that’s what he was but I wasn’t sure how to describe him. Or how he would react to events. Again, ROF to the rescue!

Angelic Forecast ~ #60

FROM LAST WEEK...

Her mother waits to thank me, her beaming pale gray eyes speaking her gratitude. Moving after her baby, she flags her gorgeous platinum and strawberry-colored tail.
“It’s a dream come true, a dream I didn’t realize I had,” I say to Sarius.

TO BE CONTINUED...

Pivoting toward me, Sarius presses his muzzle to my belly with affection.
Remember us. Remember what has happened here. It will serve you well when you return to your world.
I stroke his neck, knowing it will probably be for the last time in this lifetime. “I really don’t want to return to my world.”
Your presence there assures our survival here.
“How is that?” I am mystified.
You, and those like you, create a spiritual frequency that is needed now, more than ever.
“Sacrifice was never my thing,” I say.
No, my friend, yet love has always been your deepest nature. You created us out of your ability to love.
I chuckle drily at myself, at my life’s circumstances. “I’ll try to remember that.”
Sarius nuzzles me with a sweetness that brings tears to my eyes. We turn around together and companionably walk back the way we came. I know the Cherub is waiting for me.
Reflectively, I say, “I love Mother Earth. I love the animals, the plants, the land. I love the people on Earth.”
I know. It’s why you’re here at this time on Earth.
“I just wish the people of Earth loved each other.”

TO BE CONTINUED...

~~~~~~
This week will be unforgettable, whether it’s an event/events on the world stage or events that take place in your personal life. Currently, the forces of light and dark are shaping themselves into an ever stronger presence and the division will become dramatically more obvious in the world around us, and in those around us.
There will be choices to be made this week and in the following months. Those choices can be made from your divine core, or they can be made from dogmatic beliefs.
And, thus, your future will be formed.
MURDER BY HAIR SPRAY IN GARDENIA, NEW ATLANTIS
Blue Ribbon Rating: 4
Review by Katherine Petersen
Review Snippet ~
She handles the relationship between Kalypso and Zryphus deftly... Kougar uses her erotic scenes judiciously as well: they’re stimulating and exciting but don’t over shadow the plot. If you’re in the mood for a madcap adventure... then MURDER BY HAIR SPRAY IN NEW GARDENIA, NEW ATLANTIS will serve nicely. Kougar has created a nice balance of serious and comic in this tale, and I hope she writes a sequel soon.
Sizzlin' New Release! KATA SUTRA
Rated SCORCHING from Siren-Bookstrand's Menage Amour Line
http://www.bookstrand.com/product-katasutra-15770-201.html
When Desiree signs up for eight weeks of self-defense classes, the last thing she expects is hands-on, two-on-one training in erotic arts from a pair of muscled and breathtakingly gorgeous karate instructors. But can the passion of this ménage survive the secrets each of them is hiding?
Excerpt:
Desiree squeezed his cock and Evan appeared to unhinge. His hands found her breasts just as Mak's lips found hers. With her other hand she sought the gap in Mak's gi top and slid it inside to stroke magnificent bare chest. Senses crashed over her in a tidal wave of lust and shock. She could hardly believe what was happening to her.
Two men. Together. She could have both.
“Mak,” Evan said through gritted teeth a moment later.
The other man froze, and Desiree jerked back from their kiss, her eyes flying to Evan's looking for a scowl and command to send the other man away. Perhaps he wasn't ready to play her game, after all.
Instead, steely gray had darkened to ebony fire that sent a tingle all the way down between her thighs. His gaze flicked to Mak. “Go lock the damned door.”
His number one student leapt up and half ran to do this bidding, lest any lost and needy karate souls stumble onto their triangle. Without missing a beat, Evan pulled Desiree around to lay her half on his lap and cradled her with one arm while the other lavished maddening feather-like strokes over her nipples. His erection was firm beneath her back, and he thrust his pelvis upward with a groan to grind it against her. His mouth finally, gratefully descended over hers, and a wave of pleasure jolted from his lips straight through to her clit. Wet heat spread between her thighs when those lips prodded hers apart, his hot tongue seeking sexual delights he found with practiced ease.
Mak returned with a snort of irritation. “Hey. Still in the room here, you know.”
Still working tortuous circles around her nipples and lips, Evan drew far back enough to speak—barely. “Perhaps I was right about younger men needing more training. Or have you forgotten there's a whole other half to a woman's body?”
Desiree caught Mak's gaze in time to see it light up with wicked possibility, which set the half of her in question pulsing with warm, slick anticipation. His pants throbbed with a heat and bulk of their own, but not for long. Just before Evan claimed her mouth again and robbed her view of proceedings, her Asian god dropped his karate trousers to reveal a thick shaft that promised delight to the end of her bargain he was getting. The thought prompted her to squeeze her thighs tight together on her clit, and she moaned in response to the sharp surge of desire.
Logan's Lessons Available Today
Yew Haw! Book 2 of my Sunset Cowboys series, Logan's Lessons is now available at http://www.bookstrand.com/product-loganslessons-15746-192.html
I'm so excited because Logan is so SUPER HOT!! If you like to line dance, you won't want to miss a class or two taught by this Boot Scootin' cowboy.
Jaelynn-Sue Murphy has a dilemma and less than a week to find the solution. Little does she realize her answer is dancing in front of her, clad in drool-worthy Wranglers and cowboy boots, doing a bump and grind that sends her hormones on a bucking ride to Happy Land.
Teaching line dancing to a barroom of eager couples isn't the way Logan Cartwright planned to spend his evenings. An ailing father, family obligations at the ranch, and a failed engagement landed him on the dance floor at the Double Horn Saloon. Funny thing is he enjoys the hell out of it! He has a real talent for taking old line dancing favorites, sexing them up, and turning them hot, hot, hot. When his dream cowgirl saunters into Sunset, his brain conjures up all sorts of lessons he can't wait to teach her, including how to stay in his life forever.
Jaelynn stood on the edge of the dance floor with Logan and watched as a dozen or more couples shuffled, stomped, and stepped their way across the varnished oak. A DJ had taken up post on a platform to the left of the dance floor shortly after Logan's classes ended and immediately began playing song after song of the most popular country and western music of the decades. Billy Ray Cyrus and his soothing twang blared through the speakers now, wondering where he would live when he got home.
Excerpt:
Beside her, Logan squeezed her hand in one of his and slipped his free arm around her waist. He leaned close at her ear, his breath an intoxicating warmth on her flesh as he spoke. "Step to the right, slide the left foot over to touch, another step to the right, another slide, then turn and stomp."
"It's the C. C. Shuffle," she told him and delighted in the surprise that shifted through his eyes. "With the added turn and stomp at the end and all the…" She wiggled her hips and bit the inside of her cheek as the surprise morphed to a desire so instant and potent she felt it all the way to her booted toes. Christ, the man was danger incarnate; dangerous good looks, dangerous body, and an even more dangerous gleam of undiluted male guarantee in his eyes.
"Want to try that with a partner now?" he asked gruffly.
"Only if you promise not to laugh. I've been told I have two left feet. The expression doesn't only apply to men, you know?" She let him lead her to the center of the dance floor and let out an undignified squeak when he caught her hand, spun her around and yanked her back, her front slamming into his.
He buried his face in the side of her neck, his lips brushing her ear lobe. "I teach dance, remember. Believe me, I run across my share of women with two left feet." He started to move, a step to the right, a slide of his left foot, and a repeat of the same. "Just follow my lead."
It seemed awkward at first, doing a dance originally choreographed to be done solo in a single file line. Her steps were actually backward to coincide with his, but the way his body moved against hers, the way he'd bent his knees to bring their groins in perfect alignment for grinding drove her to near orgasm.
"You're doing good." His hands traveled from her hips to her behind, molding to her ass and drawing her closer still.
Her arms were around his shoulders, and she delved her fingers into the hairs at his nape, reveling in the feel of the silky strands. He moaned in her ear, a low grumbling sound that vibrated straight to her center and herded her one gallop closer to release.
Good. He thought she was doing good? He wanted good? She'd give him great. Her feet might have trouble keeping step but she'd never been told her hips possessed a problem.
Jaelynn arched her lower body into him, extending a leg around his as they started the next sequences and grinding her pussy against his thigh.
"Sweet Jesus," he growled, his hands squeezing her ass as he swayed with her, as the heat between them built to boiling.
"Am I doing better now?" Jaelynn teased and added an extra gyration to the turn that rubbed his cock into her heated core at such a perfect moment he would've been inside her sopping channel if not for the barrier of their jeans.
He lifted his head and looked down at her. His eyes grew heavy-lidded, their once milky brown now the color of a Dove double dark chocolate bar. "Sweet thang, you get any better at this and I'm going to want to have my way with you tonight."
"What? You don't want to yet?" She flattened her hands on his broad shoulders and let them travel down his biceps. He was solid muscle beneath her palms. All she could think about in that moment was getting the blasted shirt off of him. She wanted to be skin-to-skin with this man tonight. Now. Forget that she'd just met him. Forget that every fiber of her being screamed at her not to give into the purely carnal urge to fuck. Forget that she'd held herself in check for so very long. She wanted, and nothing had ever stopped her from taking what she wanted in the past. Why let anything start now?
"Oh, I want, babe. I want to take you somewhere and change this vertical dance we're doing to the horizontal mambo."
Jaelynn laughed. "Can you mambo?"
Amusement swam into his gaze. "I can. I bet I can even adapt it to suit."
"You mean you haven't yet?"
"Not that particular one. You'd be a first."
"Then what are you waiting for?"
He sighed, and there was so much agony in the sound her heart actually ached for him. "My place isn't exactly private right now. Unless you're into exhibitionism, then it might be right up your alley. I'm all for kinky now and then, but an audience of family members won't make it easy to get my rocks off." He winced. "Crudely speaking."
"I'll take privacy," Jaelynn stopped dancing. She'd let her hands move between them, her palms skimming over his chest, down his abdomen, his stomach. Christ on a pogo stick, there wasn't an ounce of fat on this man. She licked her lips, her mouth watering, her tongue aching to follow the same path as her hands only lower to feast on his impressive cock. "Like the kind we'll find at my trailer on the rodeo grounds."
He stepped back, his hands moving once again to her hips and holding her at arm's length. The song ended and another began, but he didn't seem to notice. His gaze remained totally focused on her and full of intense concentration. "Are you sure?"
Jaelynn took his hands in hers, all but prying them from her hips and closed the distance he'd put between them. She rose to her toes and leaned in at his ear. "Positive." She licked his lobe and delighted in the tremor that caused his body to slither against her. "Come have your way with me, Mr. Cartwright. I need a few," she sucked his lobe between her teeth, "private lessons."
How am I supposed to keep up? How am I supposed to keep everything straight in my head and figure everything out?
First there was MySpace. Now, MySpace is just plain difficult. It is! I can’t figure it out. I don’t know how to update. Someone set my MySpace up for me, but they’ve been gone (um, not in the ultimate sense, mind you, just not around the old cyber space any longer) and I don’t know how to do anything on it! I was very proud of my MySpace at one point because I thought I had Pierce Brosnan as one of my friends except I think it turned out that it was an imposter because one day he was gone. I do, however, have Kay Hooper as a friend (the real Kay Hooper) and she invited me, and all because I listed her as one of my favourite authors.
Then came BlogSpot. Okay, I kind of get BlogSpot. After all, my publisher has one and I can access it, and if I can access it, and do it right every Wednesday, then I should be able to do mine, and not only mine, but another one I am involved in with my OWG alumni (oh no, wait, that’s Word Press. Oh dear.) But…I forget to do it. Seriously. I have two BlogSpot pages, and I never remember to update either one!
It’s this darn time thing. I never seem to have enough of it. And don’t tell me I’m retired and should have lots of it because I know I’m retired, but I have less of it now than before when I had a full time j-o-b and was busy raising three kids!
Then there was Live Journal. Ha! I had one of those too, but very quickly after I got it I forgot how to do it. I even forgot my password. And, most of the people I know who did do it don’t do it anymore. Live Journal, that is.
Then came Face Book. That, in the beginning, seemed at least to be “old person friendly”. I made a face book page for myself, and began to add friends. And then friends of my friends. And then…the friends started poking me. They wanted to send me cakes and quests, they wanted me to join groups and mafia wars and farmsvilles and test to see how smart/sexy/funny/elf-like I was. They sent me invitations to concerts and to become their fans and all manner of things that I simply don’t understand in the least.
Ah, our next gem of modern technology is a little birdie, Twitter. I feel like a character on Batman, “Twitter me this…” Yes, I have twitter. How often do I go there? Hardly ever. Again, it’s this time thing. I have to write my novels. Then my essays. I need to promote every once in a while because, although I write because I can’t not, and I write because I just plain and simply love to write, it’s kind of nice to sell a book or two every once in a while. And then there are chats, which I don’t attend nearly as often as I should, or even as often as I’d like. And believe it or not, I have a bit of a life off line, too. Not much of one, but some.
One of the people I’ve added as a friend on Twitter is one of the DJs from our local radio station. Did you know there is something called a “Tweet Deck”? I just realized it. I have a question: is the “Tweet Deck” anything like the “Holo Deck” on Star Trek?
So I guess you can tweet (the correct verb for the act of posting on Twitter) from your cell phone. Well, you can, maybe, but I just got another new cell phone a couple of months ago. I have mastered the text message, and I downloaded a ring tone, and that’s all. Have mercy. I’m 55 years old. What more can you reasonably expect from me?
So, I wanted to respond on Twitter to something this local DJ had said. I go to his Twitter page, and there is the message and a link. The link takes me to his web site where another link awaits. The second link I clicked took me to something called blip.fm.
In my day when we had a blip, we didn’t tell anyone about it and we hoped like heck it went away before anyone noticed it.
So now I’ve got the Twitter, the web site, the blip – oh my.
I keep recalling that my first computer was an abacas. And I really, really wonder how I’m supposed to keep up.
Love,
Morgan
Angelic Forecast ~ #59
FROM LAST WEEK...
Energy stirs, becomes a whirlwind inside me and I feel it flow vigorously to my hand and inside her. I run my hand down her delicate body, the sensations as fierce, as healing.
It is as though I can feel the mend occur within the structure of her genes. They twine, re-ordering themselves. The moment the healing feels complete, I stroke my palm from her.
TO BE CONTINUED...
Stepping back, I watch the foal, my hand automatically taking hold of Sarius’s mane. To my relief, she glows, her increase in vitality obvious. I smile, my smile even bigger inside.
Her gaze bright with mischief, the tiny one moves toward me, extending her delicately-formed muzzle. I bend down, meeting her offered kiss. Her pressed muzzle is feather-soft against my lips and enchantment owns me.
As I rise, I know she is about to be naughty. I barely feel her parting nip above my knee. Whirling, she bucks, an adorable movement, and flashing her soft brush of a tail, she canters toward another group of foals, ready to frisk and gambol with them.
Her mother waits to thank me, her beaming pale gray eyes speaking her gratitude. Moving after her baby, she flags her gorgeous platinum and strawberry-colored tail.
“It’s a dream come true, a dream I didn’t realize I had,” I say to Sarius.
TO BE CONTINUED...
~~~~~~

The following week will bring paranormal events into your life beyond the arrival of All Hallow’s Eve. It could be as simple as the flit of what could be a ghost or a shadow person seen from the corner of your eye. It could be the heightening of your intuition. The etheric beams are definitely opening us all up to the mystic realms, more and more.
Look for some interesting paranormal events on the world stage. Anything from major UFO sightings to an increase in ghost videos and pictures. Or, something more unique... the universe has some surprises up its sleeve this week.

Emerald City Writers' Conference, Bellevue, WA -

Thanks to the organizers of the Emerald City Writers' Conference and Book Fair last weekend who ordered books and set up tables for 50 authors! Amazing! I sat next to Rosemary Jones, author of several Forgotten Realms books, and met lots of fellow authors. The room was packed. I signed postcards for the MudFlat books, plus copies of my other book. Wow! Felt like a celebrity!

There were a few books left over, so I signed the remaining copies of
Deja Vu Lover and they will be available at University Book Store, Bellevue branch, 888-335-7323 -- they ship anywhere. Also, I tucked a matching bookmark into each copy.

Would you like a Mudflat postcard? Check out my website for my email address and send me your name and address.

Lying Eyes: Two Lips Reviewers Choice and a Recommended Read

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I’m often surprised at what sells in today’s market. One minute, we read about vampires with psychological problems and the need to see a shape-shifting shrink. Then, next thing readers find are mummies on the move and everyone wants a little bump and bang in an Egyptian crypt. Hey, I’m one of those readers too.

I devour everything from Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series to Pauline Ash and Emilie Loring’s romances of yesteryear. We’re so lucky to live in an age where the oldies but goodies are easily found online and off. Full of choices, a reader can find what they’re in the mood for with one click of the mouse.

As a writer, I’m often surprised. What I think will sell well, doesn’t always bring in the numbers. Sometimes, I write something I feel will do very well to sell five hundred copies and then the book blows me away with more than five hundred copies sold within the first week. Yes, those are the times when I pop a cork and celebrate in grand style. The nice surprises and the unexpected, that’s what I love about this business.

Lying Eyes, a contemporary M/F romance, is one of those books I thought would outperform the Winning Virgin series and pretty much everything I sent out to my publishers under any pseudonym. What I discovered is mediocre sales. Don’t get me wrong. Any sale, one or five thousand of them, always earns appreciation. However, I’m promoting this book aggressively now. Lying Eyes is one of my best and covers a topic I know as well as anyone—gambling and poker. I’ve spent as many hours in a casino as I’ve probably spent behind a computer monitor so this book is near and dear to my heart. I think you’ll enjoy this contemporary erotic romance novel too.

Earning a Reviewer’s Choice and Recommended Read, Two Lips Reviewer Lila wrote, “Lying Eyes by Destiny Blaine is about a world where the slightest movement can tip off your opponent. Max is about to take the biggest bet of his life because he’s looking at Audra to give him a full house, and he’s not talking poker.

"Max Reynolds, poker champ, ladies man, devastatingly handsome, was captivated the first time he met rookie poker player Audra Alexander. Audra is young, beautiful and has a comeback to his every line. He didn’t figure he would see her much in the poker circuit after that first meeting, her being female and all. Imagine his surprise two years later when they are competing for millions in Las Vegas, but Audra and Max both have pasts that are less than a perfect hand. Can they move forward to discover a future worth having together, or leave it all behind in Las Vegas?

"I was captivated with Max and Audra from page one, not to mention the cover is really hot. Blaine introduces you to poker playing, set in Sin City itself, for The World Series of Poker. I admit, I don’t know much about poker but I had no trouble with this story. It really felt like I was there at the table, the descriptions were that vivid. I actually felt like I could imagine the feel of the table. I found myself laughing with the characters at some of the word play that went on. I think it’s a great author that can pull you into a story with descriptions that vivid. At one point, Audra asks Max “How the hell did you end up at my table?” and Max says, “I know people,” she counters back “Lucky me.” They banter like this all through the story. I really liked that Max was all out there and honest with Audra, it was refreshing to see a man really go after what he wanted. Lying Eyes is a great story, one that I intend on reading again. Destiny Blaine did a superb job, and I highly recommend the story.”

When you’re in the mood for a contemporary romance, I hope you’ll pick up your copy of Lying Eyes. The novel is now in print at Amazon and an e-copy can be purchased through Siren-BookStrand, ARE, or Fictionwise. An excerpt follows below.

Hugs and love,
Destiny Blaine

Audra immediately felt transparent when she saw him, especially since he’d become the object of her poker obsessions and a few fantasies, too. A spark of nervous energy inspired a few hairs to stand up on the back of her neck. Just feeling his warm palm in hers, even if it was only for a moment, did things to a woman that should’ve disqualified her from the tournament.

Soon after she took her seat, Audra posted the big blind and waited. She planned on folding her cards once she saw them but no one raised the bet so she stayed in the hand. The dealer dealt the first three community cards and after she saw the flop, Audra knew she owned the hand. She felt it in her gut or at least she thought so, and she’d played enough cards to earn rest assurance, to an extent.

She felt fairly confident until the man seated at the opposite end of the table decided to talk her right out of a comfort zone. Naturally, he would.

“You gonna call me, baby?” Max tossed in his chips with a raise around the same time he let go of the question. The man with the notorious reputation emerged and he didn’t waste time doing it.

As luck would have it, Audra became the center of attention. She swallowed hard. She hated to be taunted at the tables but knew how to deal with Reynolds. Even though the man she first met in Tunica didn’t remotely resemble the tough-talking poker player staring back at her now, she’d watched him play. She was ready for him because deep down she knew she needed to prepare for moments like these and men like Max.

“If I decide to call you, you’ll know it,” she fired back while trying to maintain some level of composure. Just hearing the word ‘baby’ shook her a bit but it didn’t rattle her enough to avoid a feisty comeback. Maybe it was because she anticipated words exchanged or maybe it was possible to sit there and imagine him in his underwear, an old trick she used back in high school whenever she stood in front of crowds. No, she didn’t think stripping him down to boxers worked, absolutely not. If she let her mind move too fast then she’d picture him at bare bones and her hours there would be limited. She tried to focus and just breathe. Most of the time the concept worked, she had nearly twenty-four years to serve as proof.

A player’s player, Max wasn’t just a dominant force at the poker table, he gained the respect of a true card playing powerhouse. From what Audra had heard, his skills reached far beyond the casino floor too, and one thing seemed certain, he earned quite the reputation with the opposite sex. In fact, his notoriety for being a ladies man proved legendary. A point she found hard to ignore after she began following his career.

Crossing his arms, he leaned back in his chair. “I’m right here waiting for you when you do,” he continued to tease her. Midnight blue eyes pierced through her with fierce intensity. Some would say they were as cold as the icy waters he often represented, but Audra saw something else beneath them, too. Thank goodness for Ray-Bans. She made a mental note to remember them on a daily basis now, right along with her iPod. If she covered her eyes and ears, then ignoring Reynolds wouldn’t present much of a problem.

“Waiting on a woman,” her voice hitched and the words spilled out like a song, “I imagine it’s something you’ll never tire of, kind sir.” She tilted her sunglasses down on the bridge of her tiny nose and tried to find a seductive smile—one just for him. She hoped it worked.

The men around the table appreciated the war of words. Snickers were followed by a couple of sound effects, not to mention outright laughter. The man seated on her immediate left slowly rippled his chips. Already, he irked her. It was a decision she reached in record time right after she sat down. His careful gaze, creepy really, made her very uncomfortable. Soon after she’d joined the table, the young man tried to profile her as she removed her chips from the rack.

Most of the time, profiling wouldn’t bother her. Players always tried to sum up the competition, but today wasn’t a day like any other, which is why she tilted the rack over. She even took her time to fumble around before gathering the fallen chips. Max chuckled on cue when it happened. He realized it was deliberate. The profiler didn’t have the brains to understand. He took her for a novice; a dumb brunette who had the audacity to show up at his table with boobs.

5 Blue Ribbons for Faith of the Heart!

Pamela Denise was kind enough to give Faith of the Heart, the fourth book in the award-winning Damaged Heroes series, a review for Romance Junkies this week! I'm so happy she gave the story 5 blue ribbons!

FAITH OF THE HEART is another heart warming, emotional read delivered by Sandy James, a highly talented author who knows how to create a connection between the reader and her characters. The combination of the unique plot and the very real feelings of grief and guilt grip you from the beginning. Touching on a subject not often portrayed and rendering it spectacularly, Ms. James makes every aspect believable. The journey of finding faith in others as well as within, the healing of emotional wounds, and of learning to love again, stands out beautifully in this touching story. I highly recommend this book as well as her others in the DAMAGED HEART series; they’re treasures you’ll enjoy again and again.

That's easier said than done when Katia learns about the Kindred and that the man she loves turns into a werewolf. It's also complicated by the fact that Mikhail is leader of his people.

Mikhail has to defend Katia against a Council of Elders who believe she's an inferior human, and a band of rogue werewolves is out to kill them all. Can Mikhail save his bondmate before she gets challenged again, or will Katia have to fight for her life?

Reviews:

5 CHERRIES: "Katia is a great feisty heroine that proves her worth time and time again. Mikhail is a brooding alpha male who loves Katia with all his heart. The love and trust that these two show each other was a beautiful thing to see. Especially after Mikhail shows Katia his true world and she accepts him just the way he is...Katia is a great woman ready for anything and loyal to the end. She will not take any crap from anyone and proves it at the Convocation. With all the chaos happening around her and Mikhail, she still keeps her head on her shoulders and never looses her cool. This book had me hooked from the beginning. Stormy Glenn writes a wonderful story that combines just the right amount of action and romance to keep the reader glued to the pages. I truly enjoyed this story and would love to read more on the other characters in this book." -- Mistletoe,

Spanish Eyes - getting great reviews!

I'm a very happy author right now. My historical romance, Spanish Eyes, was released Oct. 6, and already it's received two great reviews!!!

5-STARS***** In "Spanish Eyes" by Phyllis Campbell is a remarkable story of strength, romance, and determination. The sexual tension between Rebecca and Anton is so well written you feel the emotions of both characters. The story has many well written subplots that give it a fullness rarely found in romance novels. Although the sexual interactions are very explicit they are tasteful and believable. I enjoyed reading this story so much I would like to see more novels featuring these characters. This is a strong 5 star book that does not disappoint. If you curl up with this one be prepared to swoon. ~~ Marilyn Thompson / Mind Fog Reviews

5-STARS!!!! Ms. Campbell has penned a devilishly good romance with a healthy dose of suspense. The blend of intrigue, conflict, and sensual delights will have the reader hooked from the beginning. I am fascinated by the unusual type of heroine that I found in Rebecca; she is going outside the bounds of what is expected of women during this era. Her strength and tenacity combine to make her an unforgettable character. Her interaction with Anton and their ensuing relationship will keep the reader on edge wondering what might be the possible outcome, and what the journey will bring. The story is well rounded, and the secondary storylines add an extra level of enjoyment. I am already a fan of Ms. Campbell and, as usual, she does not disappoint; she has another winner in Spanish Eyes. ~~ Teagan Boyd / Bookwenches

**ADULT EXCERPT***

“The fact still remains our relationship is not based entirely on satisfying our desires.”

Rebecca threw him a glare. “That’s because we haven’t satisfied them at all.”

Anton’s heartbeat thudded in his chest, and his loins flared to attention. What made her speak of this? She knew how he felt. It sounded as if she wanted him to satisfy her...and this time, he wouldn’t let anything stop them.

“Then let us end the argument right now.” He took hold of her arm again, turning them toward the stairs as he led her below deck.

Her body stiffened, but she didn’t struggle. He assumed it was to keep the other passengers on the ship from watching them too closely.

“What are you doing?” Her voice rose.

“I am proving to you that sex is not the only reason I like you.”

“And how are you going to do that?”

“I am going to make love to you.”

“What? You contradict yourself, Señor Carrera.”

“No, because after I make love to you, you will see that I will remain by your side, protecting you until we prove my true identity. I will show you I do not just want you for your sweet, luscious body, whereas if Raúl had his wicked way with you, he would ignore you for the rest of the voyage.”

“Anton, please.” She squirmed, trying to release herself from his grip. But he wouldn’t let her go. He hurried below deck and to their room, closing the door behind them.

“Stop this insanity at once,” she hissed. “I will not let you do this.”

Anton stalked toward her, and she retreated. His arousal burned with the knowledge he’d get to prove his point soon. He must be insane, because all he wanted to do was take her in his arms and drug her with passion.

“Querida,” he whispered. “Do not think of it merely as a physical encounter, but as making love instead. We will be sharing not only our bodies, but our souls.”

The wall stopped her from retreating further, and she gasped. Her wide eyes searched for escape, but he closed in on her. He pinned her against the wall and rubbed provocatively against her.

First, he stroked her cheek, then brushed his fingers over her hair, pulling out the blue ribbon holding the bulk of her golden mass together. Waves cascaded over her shoulder, and he threaded his fingers through her glorious tresses. He stroked the silkiness once more before moving his fingers down each arm, continuing over her hips and thighs through her skirts.

“Querida,” he repeated, huskier this time. A craving took over his body, and he gave it free reign. “You are so beautiful, so desirable.”

She pressed her hands against his chest. “Anton, please.” Her breaths came quickly, just as his. The fast rise and fall of her chest showed her excitement. He took one of her hands and brought it to his mouth.

“I want to kiss every inch of your body.” He brushed his lips over her fingertips, and drew each finger into his mouth as he suckled.

“Anton.” Her voice softened.

She would stop him. But he must not let her. Not this time.

Anton turned her hand over and kissed her palm, running his tongue to her wrist. When he looked into her eyes, those golden flecks blazed with passion’s fire. He took her hands and placed them back on his chest, sliding them up and down his torso.

“Touch me, Becca.” Over the erratic beat of his heart, he flattened her hand. “Do you feel that? Can you tell how excited you make me?”

“Antonio—” she mouthed, her lids lowered half-mast, focusing on his lips.

This woman excited him more than any other, and once again, he couldn’t resist her. He placed his mouth over hers, and she opened for his probing tongue. A sigh released from her throat before her tongue mated with his. Although anxiety rushed through him, he also wanted to take it slow. This was her first time, and he didn’t want to hurry the moment.

Keeping his mouth pressed to hers, he shrugged out of his jacket. He hurriedly removed his neck-cloth and unbuttoned his shirt. When he broke the kiss, her attention dipped to his chest as he exposed himself. Excitement surged through him, making him want to continue. Shrugging free of the silk shirt, he let it fall to the floor.

Her hands explored his bare chest, spreading pleasure over him. Pleasure he wanted to drown in. He closed his eyes. Soft, delicate hands touched the muscles on his neck, his breast, then lower to his stomach, only stopping when her palms came to his trousers. Inside the material, his arousal pulsed with anticipation, but she didn’t stray there. Instead, her hands wandered back up, retracing their path.

When her fingers slid over his erect nipples, he opened his eyes. Fascination displayed on her face. Her amber orbs were heated, and she licked her lips. She bent her head and pressed her lips to the small patch of hair on his chest. Groaning, he closed his eyes. Heavy breaths escaped between his teeth, but he let her do with him as she wished.

The paranormal in my fiction

Paranormal elements creep into almost all of my fiction. Why? Because eerie, hair standing up on the back of the neck moments do happen in life, Also because I place my characters into strange situations and unusual settings, where their senses are heightened to an almost supernatural state.
In real life, people can experience extraordinary things. A woman I know of was passing a man on a staircase and a thought entered her mind: this is the man you are going to marry. She dismissed the idea as absurd - but it happened and they are still married. In life, people under stress can do extraordinary, almost superhuman things. The woman after a car crash lifting an engine block to free her trapped child beneath. We can all experience feelings of disquiet, of something being 'off'. We can all have dreams which can stalk us.
This is very much the stuff of fiction. Romance especially lends itself to the paranormal and supernatural. When we are in love we feel to be in a transfigured state: all senses and emotions are heightened. In addition, I write romantic suspense, where my characters are in danger and those warning senses we have are on high alert. I also write romance set in the past, at times in the far distant past, where beliefs in spirits, strange creatures, omens and gods were part of everyday life.
In modern life we tend to separate religion and state. In the past belief in supernatural forces, particularly malign supernatural forces, was far stronger. How else could people in the ancient world make sense of what happened to them and around them? When the causes of illness were not understood it would seem logical that an outside influence - an angry god or an evil spirit - had targeted that person or that animal.
Belief is a powerful force. If a character believes he or she can do something out of the ordinary, then sometimes they can. In my historical fiction I use the beliefs of my characters to allow them to tap into something larger than themselves. This 'something' can be a thing of delight or of terror. It is the wonder of the story-teller, used in tales before humans devised writing. And when we did begin to write, ghost stories, paranormal stories 'spooky' stories, were among the earliest tales we committed to clay, papyrus or parchment.
Here are a few paranormal moments from my novels. The first is based on an ancient Roman ghost story of a haunted house, which I adapted to use in 'Flavia's Secret'. In this excerpt, the paranormal is used to show wonder and delight in a special, secret place; a place where Flavia finds the strength to tell Marcus her own deadly secret.

EXCERPT:

Walking quickly, to show that she did not regret her decision to share this place with him, Flavia returned along the twisting beaten-earth path between the rampant rosemary and lavender bushes. One more twist of the path and they reached the heart of the garden and its startling secret—a private outdoor pool, its shimmering waters steaming in the sun.
‘By Mithras, what a place.’ Looking around, Marcus halted beside her, dropping onto his knees to test the waters of the deep, lead-lined pool. ‘It’s hot!’ he exclaimed, shaking moisture from his hand.
Flavia pointed to a large lead pipe leading away from the pool in the direction of the deserted house before it was lost in the luxuriant undergrowth.
‘We think the owner fixed a conduit somewhere off the spring waters of the Aesculapius spring and directed some of the thermal water here,’ she explained. ‘The pool drains somewhere, too, but we do not know where.’
Marcus sat back on his heels. ‘We?’
‘Those of us who come here, when we can.’
‘Your own private bathing place.’ Marcus jumped to his feet again and walked around the marbled perimeter of the pool. ‘I am surprised nobody has tried to make money with it.’
‘We are careful who we tell,’ Flavia said, squashing disappointment at Marcus’ mercenary approach, but he was staring across the sun-gilded water at the leaf-strewn timber portico leading to the deserted house.
‘I am not surprised at that,’ he said quietly. ‘It is beautiful.’
He watched a small breeze tumble a bronze oak leaf along a small marble walkway leading from the semi-derelict portico to the edge of the pool. ‘Mysterious, quite eerie, but also...comforting. As if you are in an entirely different world.’ He turned about, pointing to the sparkling spiders’ webs on the lavender bushes, rimed with heavy dew. ‘Somewhere forgotten by the rest of the city. A place where magical things become possible.’
‘You understand,’ Flavia whispered, breathing out in relief.
He smiled. ‘It is more than likely that the old owner saw an easy chance to grab some free hot water, but what he has made here, what time has made...I am not surprised he was thought to be a sorcerer.’
Marcus held out both hands to her. ‘Thank you for sharing this, and be assured—your secret with be safe in my keeping.’
Flavia walked to the edge of the secret pool and joined him in studying the waters.

In 'Bronze Lighting,' set in Bronze Age Europe, many characters believe in and practice magic. Here Fearn and Sarmatia, hero and heroine, are taking part in a sky ritual, a dangerous rite that they believe may unmask a murderer.

EXCERPT:

By this time it was early evening. A pall of dark clouds had gathered over the Sacred Hill. The sun hung over the eastern hills like a bloodstained shield. Fearn looked up at the sky.
'The God will come here when I summon him and we must be ready. Each of you strip off your gold, your silver and bronze. The Sky God does not like the gleam of metal on others.'
He lifted the bronze diadem from his head and laid it on the grass. 'Pile your ornaments here together. Give it to the earth for safekeeping. Quickly!'
At his command, Atterians broke their circle and came to heap their metal broaches, swords, arrows, arm-rings and finger-rings upon the King's diadem. Sarmatia watched Laerimmer take off his golden throat disc and glanced down at her own bronze ring, reluctant to remove it. Looking up, she saw Fearn walking towards her.
'Must I take off my ring?' she asked in Kretan as he reached her. Fearn answered in the same tongue.
'I fear so, Sarmatia.' He looked at her. Men were still gathered about the growing heap of metal. He and Sarmatia had a moment together.
'What is this ritual?'
'Nothing you need fear, Sarmatia. The Sky God knows our hearts. He does not touch those who are innocent. Twice now as King I've been asked to do this rite. The God may take some of our metal as sacrifice and payment, but that's a small thing for the truth.'
Sarmatia took off her bronze ring and gave it to Fearn. 'You must put this with the rest, Fearn. I can't.’ Then, although she already sensed the answer, she asked, 'Is the Sky God the same whose shrine is the Great Stone Circle?'
'It's the same God. And this is the rite the southern kingdoms have forgotten.' He turned and left her.

There are gods in my novels, too. In 'Blue Gold' the gods of ancient Egypt watch mankind from the sun-boat that crosses the sky each day and they sometimes interfere more directly.

EXCERPT:

“What happens now?” asked Astarte-with-the-moon-in-her-hair.
The eastern goddess of love was paying another visit to the sun boat of Ra. She thought the climate good for her complexion.
The blue god Amun, casting an admiring glance at the silver-haired goddess’s shapely long legs, mumbled something about a race. He ran his hands through a thick fleece of cloud, parting it with his fingers. “Look below us. There is my Pharaoh, a true Egyptian.”
“Ah yes. Sekenenre. The king who toils like an ant. He certainly looks to be making haste.”
Astarte leaned forward, the corners of her eyes crinkling at the sight of Sekenenre and his retinue of priests running their chariots again and again at the same high dune instead of doing the sensible thing of going round it. At her high vantage point, the fifteen chariots moving with such fanatical haste from the small water course where they had hidden their ship looked bizarre, like weevils.
No one on the sun boat reproved or remarked on the goddess’s comments. Those long, shapely legs were even better when she bent over the gunwale. From the middle of the boat came a muffled exclamation as the soul of the long dead Pharaoh Unas dropped the sun god’s fan.
“Fool of a mortal,” said old Ra sharply, squirming on his throne, crossing hands over thighs.
Astarte looked round over one shoulder and smiled, but she reserved her warmest look for Amun. “He is a long way from Thebes, your Sek-en-enre. Did you send a dream to instruct him? Does this true Egyptian know where he is going?”
“Pay no attention to anything Amun says. Sekenenre’s dash into the desert is due entirely to me.” Set materialized at her elbow. He directed Astarte to look over the other side of the boat. “Here’s my man.”
Aweserre’s chariot scuttled jauntily along below them.

In ‘Blue Gold’ when these two pharaohs meet, it is a clash of arms, force and beliefs and it leads to the unleashing of more paranormal forces.

Happy Halloween!

Wednesday's Words for October 14, 2009

Being a writer isn’t easy. Yes, sometimes the writer has considerable talent, and whether or not you have talent really isn’t your call, it’s God’s, which is a gift. But all the rest of it you have to forge, you have to work at yourself. And it can be very hard work.

The best writers write with passion, and I’m not necessarily talking about the kind of passion you’ll find in romance. Although if you do write romance, it had better be pretty darn passionate.

Writing with passion means your emotions are involved in the piece you’re crafting. It may also mean that you passionately believe in what you are writing, and that passion of your own belief gives your work not only the ring of truth, but strength of character.

I’ve read the works of authors who use mainly their intellect to craft a book, as opposed to their emotions. I would have to say, for the most part, it shows.

So my question is, what do you do when your emotions are otherwise occupied – that is, when life does what life always seems to do and throws challenges your way?

It just so happens that I have several friends, writers all, who are going through emotional hell right now. And to a one, they worry about whether or not they will be able to write through this time of turmoil, or even after it.

It happens to all of us from time to time. And maybe, because we are writers – artists, if you will – when our lives go into upheaval or when things take a negative turn, it affects us more than it does other people.

I have an expression I use with regard to my writing. In fact, I used this expression in a book I’ve written that may or may not ever see the light of publication. And that expression is: much of life is metaphorical water for my writing well.

Everything I experience, good and bad, everyone I meet, every place I go, in short all that I live, goes into my well. And it is from this well that I draw in order to write.

I have a unique interpretation of that old saw, “write what you know”. Some people take that to mean, write only what you have experienced, that, for example, if you’ve never been a doctor then you cannot write about being a doctor. If you’ve never been to Northern Nevada, then you cannot write about Northern Nevada. My translation is that what I write isn’t about being a cowboy or a doctor, a King or a thief. It’s not about being in Northern Nevada or Boisdemer. My stories are about the people and their journeys through the emotional minefields of life.

The circumstances of my novels may be fictional, but the emotions, and the mental wrangling of the characters, their challenges and their ordeals are real.

For that reason, the negative things we go through in life are given a positive turn, as they serve to help us, as authors, connect with more of the greater “life experience”. They help us tell stories that because of this emotional connection, touch more readers.

My advice to any writer who is going through emotional hell, is to write about your hell. No, maybe you can’t work on your w.i.p. right at this moment. But you can write, because that is what you do, and for a lot of you, like myself, that is what you are.

The writing will get you through the hard times. And the thoughts and feelings that you pen, even if no one else ever reads them, will serve to help you grow as an author, just as life’s challenges help you grow as a person. Writing it all out will also serve as extremely inexpensive psycho-therapy.

The writing will help you heal.

Love,
Morgan
