Conquering India!

Hi! For those of you who don't know me, my name is Melissa Schroeder and I write sensual to erotic romance in just about every time period known to man, lol. I was very excited to try a new to me genre, a full menage. I had written menages before. but never one where they stayed together at the end of the book.

Conquering India takes place in my homestate of Texas and is the first of my Texas Temptations Series. India and her men were a lot of fun to write, and I am writing the sequel about her friend Delilah next. Be sure to pop on over to my website and read the excerpt I have up. And what about that cover? Didn't Jinger do a FAB job?!

5 STAR REVIEW for LOVE LESSONS WITH THE TEXAS BILLIONAIRE

Love Lessons with the Texas Billionaire' has just received it's first review from Manicreaders, and it's 5 STARS!!

Author, Jan Bowles has officially won me over as a fan. I didn’t think she could top her first novel The Return but with her latest one she has done just that. Jack had the Texas charm that you couldn’t help but fall for, even when he was smirking. Eva is a spitfire. She really tested Jack’s patience. No matter how much she pushed his buttons, he was gentle with her; exactly why I liked him. This story is a feel good book. Be warned as this story may have you laughing and crying. Love Lessons with the Texas Billionaire is a must read! You better pick up a copy of this book soon before it flies off the shelves -- Cheryl, Manicreaders

Wednesday's Words for February 24, 2010

We finally got our first real “dumping” of snow this year, and I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but it is all Mr. Ashbury’s fault.

I was driving him to work Monday morning. Looking out at the passing fields my beloved said, “This is pretty good, isn’t it? Practically the last week of February and no snow. I think winter’s over.”

“They’re calling for snow today,” said I. “Five inches at least.”

That was when he uttered those words: “Nah, never happen. I really think we’re done with winter.”

He’s older than I am by a couple years. If I know enough to never say never, you would think he’d know enough not to as well.

But alas, he said those words and sealed our fate. The drive Monday afternoon to go get him from work was the first really difficult drive of this winter. But am I going to complain? Not likely. Complaining falls under the same heading as “never say never”. And truthfully, it wasn’t as bad as I’ve seen it in years past. The round trip that usually takes me an hour and fifteen minutes took just a half hour more. I had purchased a complete set of brand-new snow tires in November—four of them—and this was the first winter I’d done so. Now that I have experienced the difference they make, I won’t willingly be without them again.

So many people have had such a horrible winter this year. Snow has fallen in record amounts in places that don’t usually see more than a light dusting, if that. It seems wrong somehow that we’ve escaped with so little snow, though we have had some pretty cold days. Personally, I really don’t know how anyone can look at the weather patterns over the last few years and not know that something has changed.

The recent snow fall notwithstanding, there have been signs of spring in the last week or two, and as you can imagine I cherish each of them. There’s a bird that sings in the spring time—I have no idea what he may look like, or even his species. I only know what he sounds like. As I was snuggling back in bed one day last week after returning from my morning commute, he serenaded me as I drifted off to sleep. What a wonderful gift that was!

Near the end of February the sky changes from that totally washed out blue to one of a deeper hue, and I noticed this just this past Saturday. And a few mornings ago, the air smelled so fresh and clean, I stopped to inhale deeply and felt instantly rejuvenated. It felt like spring was just around the corner.

It may seem I’m wishing my days away. I’m not, really. Time is precious, and no one knows that more than I do. And generally, I consciously take time every day to smell the roses and the coffee. It’s not the time I want to hurry on, it’s just the cold weather.

Part of my enmity with winter has to do with the lack of sunshine. I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. Too many cloudy days tend to drag me down, and while I know there are special lights I can buy to help to fight this condition, I seem unable to get around to getting them. Combating the winter blues becomes a major part of my day. I have to make a conscious effort to look forward, to plan things that are fun and cheering. And I have to remember to pamper myself once in a while.

In the mean time, the weather report I heard on the car radio this morning was not encouraging. The eastern seaboard of the United States may be in for another very serious winter storm, and we’re schedule for another five to ten inches here, too, over the next few days.

I turned to look at Mr. Ashbury as that radio weather report finished and reminded him of one very important fact: the snow shovel is on the front porch.

I don’t do sidewalks or porch steps or dig out the car. And that’s one ‘never’ he can take to the bank.

Love,
Morgan

Angelic Forecast ~ #77

“Those who control the Moon. A message?” I ask. Snowflakes flutter down suddenly. Their cold wetness feels like kisses on my face.
“There’s a territorial war actually, many of them occuring around Earth. Space wars for lack of a better description.” The Heavenly One waves his arm and we shoot upwards. “Those who currently have control of the moon have sent a warning to what some on Earth call the secret space program.”
“You mean like ‘Dark Mission’, Richard Hoagland’s book talks about?”
“Yes, and bigger than what is revealed by the incomparable Mr. Hoagland.” The Cherub gives me one of his patented grins.
“Are you talking about the hidden base or bases down in Antarctica?”
“That is the major base of operations. Along with Agentina.”
I shiver and not from the soft slash of snow on my face and body. “It’s bad, isn’t it? And it’s only going to get worse.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“There are angelic forces at work to stop most of what could occur. There is progress...”
I quake inside at what the Cherub hasn’t said yet. Space wars...

This week brings many good opportunities to plan for Spring. Even though the wintry cold continues for a lot of us, take some time to consider what you’d like to accomplish this coming Spring.
If you’re a gardener, you may very well be ahead of the game, looking for seeds and making plans. If you’re not, or simply thinking about doing some gardening, this is an excellent time to explore and then do it.
This Spring also offers new career opportunities for many of us, especially in the areas of what could be called *old-timey* skills, the skills of your grandparents or great grandparents.
If you’re not already *crafting*, for example knitting, take a look at what appeals to you the most, in the way of hands-on, making-it-yourself skills.
Remember the more love you give, the more you will receive, especially this week.

Wednesday's Words for February 17, 2010

Growing up in Canada, I’m old enough to remember the great Flag debate of 1964-1965. For those of you who don’t know, up until then, our flag was the Union Jack. Now you’re all saying....hmmm....why does that name sound familiar?

The Union Jack is the flag of Great Britain. We have always been the shy, insecure child who did not want to let go of our parent’s apron strings. Our first Prime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald, is quoted as having said, “A British subject I was born, and a British subject I shall die.” That was during the negotiation of the British North America act of 1867 which created the Dominion of Canada. Whose Dominion? Why, the Queen’s, of course.

Then came the Statutes of Westminster, 1931, at which point Canada’s legislature was granted independence from Britain’s. Ha, you thought we were a free and independent nation in 1867, but no, it didn’t happen until 1931.

By the way, my mother adopted Sir John A’s sentiment as her own and darn near clobbered my brother for daring to put a red and white Maple Leaf flag on the family car back in 1964. Mother was very disappointed to lose the Union Jack (when Parliament adopted the Maple Leaf on February 15, 1965) and the Canadian Ensign (an Ensign is less than an official flag – sort of like one of those team banners on Survivor).

Hell of a long time to wait to take our first steps, wasn’t it? We began to run in 1982, when we repatriated our Constitution from Great Britain. But to this day, (as any of you may have noticed if you watched the opening of the Olympics) we have a Governor General who is the official head of state. She is vice-regal, meaning, she represents the Queen. So we may be walking and running, but it feels as if we’re tethered. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-Royal. God Bless The Queen.

You’re probably all wondering where I am going with this history lesson.

Well my point is that all of my life, I’ve been very aware of Canada’s “national character” and that character is of a younger sibling not quite sure of itself or its place in the world. Feeling as if it’s never quite good enough. In other words, we the people of this nation have always had an inferiority complex. We have always been your shy, quiet neighbor to the north, the neighbor whose patriotism always came out at the decibel level of a whisper.

To a certain extent, we’re still like that. So when the 2010 Olympics were yet months away, an ad campaign began [with the key line: Do You Believe?] to try and stir Canadians’ hearts to the point that we would not only actually yell and scream and wave our flags, but maybe believe that we deserved to stand with the best in the world.

In addition, in 2005, an actual technical program called “Own the Podium” was created with the purpose to prepare athletes and coaches with the best technical knowledge, leadership, and training with the goal of achieving prominence in the winter Olympics of 2010 (a worthy goal since in the previous two Olympics held in our nation no Canadian athlete won a single gold medal). This was not a “secret plan” as I remember hearing about it on television during the coverage of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. Why shouldn’t a nation invest itself in its young people, teach them that it’s okay to strive for excellence, to want to win? And yet everyone from Stephen Colbert to the British tabloids are heaping invectives upon my country over that program and these Olympics.

There is no question, the horrific accident on the luge track last week in which an athlete from Georgia, Nodar Kumaritashvili, lost his life was beyond tragic. No one expected such a thing to happen at such a joyous celebration as the Olympics, and yet many of the sports I see represented here can be very dangerous. Sports fans everywhere mourned the death of so young a man who had come only to do his best, and well they should. Obviously, the accident needs to be investigated, and the decision to move the starting point on the track to below the sharp curve that created such high speeds was the right decision to make.

Perhaps recommendations will come that will improve the safety of a sport which to me looks insanely dangerous to begin with. This is good, and necessary. This is what we, as a civilized people, need to do, so that tragedies need not be repeated.

I’m not certain it’s fair to blame an entire nation, to insinuate that with one mind we sought to harm this young man. “Own the Podium” is not—despite what some of the media would have you believe—synonymous with “win at any cost”.

We may dare to seek to stand taller, but we are still Canadians.

Love,
Morgan

New Release 'Love Lessons with the Texas Billionaire' by Jan Bowles

My name is Jan Bowles and I’m an author of contemporary romances. I live with my husband in an old farmhouse in rural Lincolnshire, England, in the UK.

When I’m not writing I paint large landscapes and sweeping vistas. I also love walking, and looking in old antique shops. There just might be something someone has overlooked. If you’d like to know more about me please visit my WEBSITE or FACEBOOK page.

Let me introduce you to my latest release from Siren-Bookstrand. ‘Love Lessons with the Texas Billionaire’. It’s a very sexy hot read that’s sure to warm up the coldest of winter nights. So grab a cocoa and curl up with my latest release.

I have to say that I’m very proud of the cover that’s been created for me by cover artist Jinger Heaston. It shows all the passion and romance that the book contains. It’s just perfect for the two main characters portrayed.

‘Love Lessons with the Texas Billionaire’ focuses on Eva St. John. She is an English beauty who is flown to Texas to shadow, rugged billionaire oilman, Jack McClaine, for the magazine article she is writing.

He has a reputation as a fast living, womanising rogue, who has quite literally come from the wrong side of the tracks. A self-made man who always gets what he wants.

Still nurturing a broken heart and a secret past she left behind her long ago, Eva intends to remain professional at all times. Will she be strong enough to resist the inevitable sexual advances of the predatory Texan, Jack McClaine? Ultimately, will she really want to?

I really love the strong charismatic character of Jack McClaine. He’s flawed, and yet so loveable. He’s a real sexy Texan, with a gritty past, and an eye for the ladies. I guess Eva will have her hands full when it comes to taming him! Yet, Eva is more than a match for Jack. Strong-willed and determined to stay professional, she will not yield so easily.

Here’s an excerpt

“Why, Miss Eva St. John, I feel about as welcome as a skunk at a lawn party.” Jack McClaine spoke as mild amusement played around his silver-grey eyes.

Eva eyed him warily. It was only two days since she had first laid eyes on the rugged Texan. Now his lithe, athletic frame perched on the desk, her desk. He looked every inch at home, as if he belonged there. Wearing a light grey suit, he seemed to think his very tall six-foot-three-inch frame had somehow a right to be there.

“Just what is going on, Mr. McClaine?” Eva folded her arms across her chest, her mouth compressed with indignation, as she waited for his answer. Her gaze was drawn inexorably to his, and like a laser it burned into her. Then as a smile spread from his eyes down to the deep dimples at the side of his mouth, she felt the breath escape from her lips in a silent gasp. Why did he have to be so damned attractive? She had to fight the sudden urge to push the stray hair back that had fallen forward across his forehead.

“Mr. McClaine, are you going to answer my question?”

“Hold on now, darlin’, I thought we were on first-name terms already.” He smiled at her in amusement.

“No, we’re not.” She slumped into her chair and glared up at him. “Andrew Jameson could shadow you for a month. Why do you want me? I won’t be a pushover, you know. I’ll certainly write exactly what I think.”

He smiled easily and twisted around to meet her frosty gaze. “Now, why would I want Andrew Jameson to shadow me for a whole month? Live in my home. Share my food. Share my life. Why would I want him when I’d be much happier with you?”

Eva picked up a pen and pointed it at him. “You, Mr. McClaine, have a reputation. If you are expecting anything but a working relationship, then you are mistaken.”

“Well, that’s settled then, honey.”

She looked up watching the amusement play around his eyes. The creases channelled down to his mouth. “Don’t look so smug, Mr. McClaine. You may regret your decision to invite New Dawn magazine into your home. You may not like what I write. Be careful what you wish for, Mr. McClaine.”

“Darlin’, I’ve never regretted anything in my life.”

“I told you once before, Mr. McClaine, I’m not your honey, and I’m telling you now, I’m not your darling either.”

He laughed. “Eva, it’s just a figure of speech. It don’t mean anything.”

That afternoon a huge row developed with her boss, Simon Jessop, but he wouldn’t back down. If she pulled this off, he’d give her a raise. Even more than that, he’d give her a promotion. She wanted to know why he thought Jack McClaine specifically asked for her to do the article. His thoughts exactly mirrored her own. He had lifted his hands in the air, an expression of helplessness on his face, and said, “You’re a big girl, Eva. I’m sure you can handle yourself, and Jack McClaine.”

Well, thanks!

Eva felt like a dish served up specifically for Jack McClaine’s pleasure. What’s more, her boss had handed her over on a solid silver platter.
See what I mean. Eva will certainly have to watch out for the very sexy, rugged Texan, Jack McClaine. You can find out more about ‘Love Lessons with the Texas Billionaire’ HERE Available Now from Siren-Bookstrand.

Turning Thirty-Twelve ~ Best Book of 2009!

It's with great pleasure I announce that Turning Thirty-Twelve was named Best Book of 2009 by Long and Short Reviews!

Blurb:

Jackie Delgado didn't want a new man in her life until a dreaded blind date turns out to be more exciting than she'd ever imagined.

When her youngest son leaves for college, Jackie is hit hard by empty nest syndrome and pours herself into her work as a teacher. Bowing to pressure from friends, Jackie agrees to a blind date. But when Mark Brennan calls, she realizes the date won't be "blind." He's the father of one of her students.

Widower Mark Brennan isn't looking for love. After only a few dates with Jackie, he realizes he's quickly forming deep feelings for her. Wracked with guilt that he's "abandoning" his late wife, Mark resists the pull toward dynamic Jackie. When Mark's daughter begins to date Jackie's son, things become more complicated.

Can Jackie and Mark find the courage to leave the past behind and embrace a new love? And how will a surprise pregnancy affect all their lives?

"Forty should never be considered 'over-the-hill.' When I passed that milestone, I decided to write a strong, sexy forty-something heroine who broke the stereotypical romance mold. Jackie Delgado lives life out loud, refusing to surrender her vitality and passion simply because of a number. And for a dynamic character like Jackie, I just had to create equally passionate hero, Mark Brennan." ~Sandy~

Angelic Forecast ~ #76

“Yellowstone National Park, yes,” the Heavenly One confirms.
“Earthquake. Is the Yellowstone caldera being activated?” Everything inside me quakes. If the caldera explodes into a full-fledged volcano then those of us living in North America are in a bad way, a seriously bad way. Not only that, the entire Earth will be affected.
“Earthquakes, over a thousand now have been activated, already,” the Cherub explains, floating us above areas of melted snow.
“Why?” I’m still trembling inside, my own speculations racing at such a fast rate I can’t keep up with them.
Sitting close to me on our cloud, he points downward. Ripples, gigantic ripples flow outward, waving the ground below. “It’s who and why.”
“Who?” The choking smell of sulphur reaches my nose and I cough. Immediately, the Heavenly One soars us higher.
“Those who control the Moon. It’s a message.”

~~~~~~
For the following week it will be advisable to take a breath. To simply stop, if you can, and inhale several deep breaths. Do those things or engage in those activities that could be called languorously enjoyable, or leisurely. Nap. Curl up. Cuddle with those you love, yes, including your beloved pets.
Life has been on fast forward for quite some time with the convergence of several dynamics. Among them is the transition to the Aquarian Age. The crash and smash of what was the Age of Pisces is being accomplished, and none too soon. Many of the corrupted dreams that once represented this passing ‘Age of a Dreaming World’ are now being destroyed. Bashed to bits by the constant hammering of TRUTH.
Much of what has been accepted as the truth will be revealed to be nothing more than myth, myths created to control those who desire freedom, and would truly live free or die.
Do not let these revelations change the core of who you are. Let them change how you live in the world and how you create your life. This is the real power of change.
is added. While oil is warming, open and separate biscuits. Cut each biscuit in half. Drop 3-4 at a time in hot oil and fry over medium heat, turning over as
needed until both sides are light to medium brown. Don't walk away from these, the cooking goes pretty fast! Remove cooked donuts immediately with slotted spoon to drain on paper toweling.
To make your menage of toppings/glaze/icing:
1. Mix a few tbsp of powdered sugar and cinnamon to taste in shallow bowl. Pat 1/3 of the donuts well dry with paper towels, then roll in the mixture.
2. Combine several tbsp powdered sugar in shallow bowl with enough water to make a thin glaze. Add a small dash vanilla. Glaze 1/3 of the donuts by coating in the mixture, then place on a wire rack set over a cookie sheet or pain to drain until dry. OR, set donuts on wire rack, then drizzle glaze over top.
3. Take remaining powdered sugar glaze (if any, otherwise heap a couple more tbsp powdered sugar in the same shallow bowl) and stir in cocoa powder to your preference. Add enough water to make a thick glace or "icing" consistency. Drop remaining 1/3 donuts, flat down on the top side, into the chocolate icing, then twirl as you remove them to drip off excess.
Makes 16-20 donuts (depending on how many biscuits were packaged in your brand)
Enjoy!
Valentine Negotiations
Valentines Negotiation 20 years after the wedding...
Dear Darling Cupid,
For Valetines Day I would like a big box of fat-free, calorie-free chocolates, a moonlit stroll along the beach, a long soak in a hot bath followed by a sensual massage and lots of loving moments with my hubby.
Love always Rachel
Dear Rachel
You don't like sand, remember? And you know there is no such thing as calorie-free chocolate.
Love Always Cupid
Dear Cupid
Okay, so no beach stroll and no chocolates, but can I still have the bath, massage and time with hubby?
Love Rachel
Dear Rachel
You don't have time for a long bath. The kids need to get to football and dance practice, the dog has an appointment with the vet, and I happen to know that your hubby has to work the late shift.
Love Cupid
Dear Stupid Cupid
So what can I have?
Rachel
Dear Rachel
I can organize for you a one time only, uninterrupted, three minute shower or a five minute chat with your hubby.
And don't call me stupid!
Cupid
Dear Stupid...er...I mean Cupid
Would the shower be before or after the kids use all the hot water?
Rachel
Rachel
Oh if you insist. One three minute, uninterrupted, HOT shower. Take it or leave it?
Cupid
Dear Sweetie Cupid
Hot water! Woot! Count me in.
Love always Rachel
Okay so maybe life isn't quite so hectic, but it sure can mess with the romance. What are you hoping Cupid brings this year? Come share your thoughts on the Siren Bookstrand Readers Group - just click on the heart.
The Cover for The Return Wins Prestigious Award
The cover for The Return has just won an award from Classic Romance Revival for their January competition. And will now go forward to their competition for the cover of the year award at the end of 2010.
"Their Classic Cover Contest, celebrates the "face" of Classic Romance and the authors and artists "behind" them - and, of course, the books "inside" them!"
A big thank you must go to the artist who created it. Well done Jinger Heaston.
Wednesday's Words for February 10, 2010
I want to address something that most of you know about, although some of you only recently learned of: e-book piracy.
Actually, “piracy” sounds kind of exotic and sexy, so let’s call it, instead, what it really is: theft.
I know that a lot of people who read these essays every week are e-book authors. Some of you aren’t authors, but this concerns you, too.
I am going to presume that none of you have stolen from any of the writers you have met on line, or even any that you haven’t met. But maybe you know someone who has. This essay is directed at them, and you may feel free to pass this on.
Those of us who are writers have been vigilant in sending out Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) take down notices, as have many of our publishers. Personally, I liken this exercise to trying to bail out the ocean with a thimble: at the end of the day you have a fat file to look at as your accomplishment, but it doesn’t really seem to make any difference.
I think we’re going about fighting this heinous crime (yes, it is a crime! It is against the law!) the wrong way. I think we need to target the people using these services and scooping these “free e-books”. After all, if people didn’t take advantage of this opportunity, the opportunity would cease to exist. I think we need to reach these users of this criminal service (and therefore criminals themselves by extension) just the same way Candy Lightner (the founder of MADD) reached people about the crime of drunk driving: through education and publicity.
The publicity has been happening on most of the loops I belong to for the last several months. That publicity is going to get even more wide spread as major houses continue to put their books on line. Perhaps this essay – which may find itself being reproduced in some unusual places—will help with not only the publicity, but the education.
Now, here comes some of that education for you, and please, as I said earlier, feel free to pass this along to all your friends—and here I directly address those thieves.
Going to one of these sites and downloading an e-book for free is stealing, in the very same way that going to the variety store and lifting a chocolate bar from the counter and walking out without paying for it is stealing, or going into a department store and taking a lipstick, or necklace without paying for it is stealing. If you wouldn’t do either of those things, then why would you steal an e-book?
Now, maybe (because you just don’t know any better) you think it’s no big deal. Maybe you think, “huh, well this is different and besides, those writers are rich. Why are they crying over a few bucks? They can afford it.”
The truth of the matter is that stealing is stealing, period. And for the most part, it’s not rich writers who are losing those few bucks. It’s not Nora Roberts or Dan Brown or even J.K. Rowling who are being stolen from, although I am sure they will be; it’s ordinary, everyday hard-working men and women, who often times barely have enough money to match the size of their month who are being robbed. Yes, they are being robbed.
I know of one author who is a single mom of several children and the only income she has, is what she earns in royalties from her e-books.
Allow me to put this theft that she experiences, then, into a different perspective.
When someone takes a “free” download of one of her stories, one of her children goes without a glass of milk. Someone stole another of her stories? Oh dear, another of her children couldn’t get the shoes he needed – or a warm coat, or a pair of mittens.
Yes, stealing e-books is in fact stealing the necessities of life from children. And no, I am not being melodramatic at all. This is what e-book piracy is in its most basic form.
If you know someone who takes advantage of these sites, please tell them this: E-books don’t cost all that much. They’re good value for the dollars charged. All you’re “saving”, really, when you go to one of those sites and take that “free” download is a couple of dollars.
But you see, the truth is it’s not really free at all. Think of the cost to your soul.
Love,
Morgan
Valentine's, Day 4
Happy Paranormal/Fantasy Day!
Kara Wills here with a non-Valentine's Day story about finding love when least expecting it. I can't tell you how many people preached to me that love would come when you least expect it. I wasn't expecting it, really, but I hoped every man that came my way would be Mr. Right. After a two year on and off emotional roller coaster, the last thing I wanted was a man, a relationship, or anything having to do with matters of the heart.
Little did I know that my earlier wishes and dreams of Mr. Right would come knocking at my door when I wanted most to triple bolt that door shut. Heck, sodder that thing closed!
I have one word to say here: SANGRIA.
One night, a group of us ended up at our favorite Latin club, sharing pitchers of some of the best sangria I've ever had, and dancing. A close friend of mine asked to dance-a request I thought nothing of-and off we went. Halfway through our Salsa bit he blurted out, "I was wondering if you want to go out with me." My response? "Sure." Now, at this point, most men would gloat in their success and all would be fine. Mine? Oh, no. I got a, "Really?"
Well, seven years later, we're married with a son and still living like a new couple. As for the sangria? I later found out he drank a pitcher and a half to get up the nerve to ask me out that night, and stubbornly insist he can't remember whistling at another woman as we left!
Love comes in all differents forms and definitely when you least expect it.
Hugs,
Kara
New review of 'Blue Gold'
I've recieved an excellent new review of Blue Gold from Steve Donoghue at the Historical Novel Society:
'Early on in Blue Gold, Lindsay Townsend’s fast-paced novel of ancient Egypt in 1560 B.C., the charismatic (and acrobatic) Pharaoh Aweserre shouts in battle: “I’m the best there is! You’re looking at a man who can drive between your wind and your ass — watch!” You can’t really resist that kind of invitation, but you know one thing for sure: Cecil B. DeMille this isn’t.
Townsend’s story centers on the Pharaoh Sekenenre, his scheming wives, his scheming children Kamose and Ahhotpe, and—in the book’s most innovative stroke—the multifaceted Egyptian deities themselves, especially the god of storms and upheavals, Set, whose immortal perceptions add spice to an already plenty spicy narrative:
He [Set] saw the lines of the future mapping out from this tiny room, yet he could not see exactly where they ended. No one, not even Ra, could do that. Endless beginnings: that was one of the gods’ functions.
The sands of Townsend’s Egypt are blood-soaked, and the halls of her palaces echo with lust and intrigue — and yet, the most interesting part of her novel is how real, how human all of her characters feel (even the supernatural ones). Even while you’re booing and hissing her villains, you’re fully informed as to their motives and might even sympathize a little. Part of this effect can be attributed to Townsend’s keen ear for dialogue and phrasing (when two characters kiss we’re told “their lips met with the greedy accuracy of lovers”) — and the effect is so strong that when all the book’s grandstanding and conniving and personal drama has concluded, readers will be mildly shocked to be reminded that the whole delightfully complicated business happened three thousand years ago. That’s praise indeed. -- Steve Donoghue'
Regan's Valentine's Story
Some people may call it a Hallmark Holiday, but Valentine’s day has always been one of my favorites. I still like those goofy little heart candies with the oddball sayings and total taste delight – PEEPs has a Valentine’s line!
I suppose some could say this was a disastrous Valentine’s day and others that it was a romantic one. To me Valentine’s day 1992 was a day of endings and beginnings. I was engaged to a Marine Corps Cobra pilot who was having issues after Desert Storm. It really changed his emotional paradigm and we were going to talk out our relationship on Valentine’s day that year. I told him I’d be at my parents’ house which was close to his base and we’d meet and talk. He never showed. I waited and waited. Checked my messages a hundred times while I sat and looked out my parents’ kitchen window. I was devastated when he never showed.
And then, another Marine showed up. This one flew CH-53’s – the helo that the Marine’s used in commercials with the knight in shining armor fighting with his sword and slowly morphs into a modern day Marine in dress blues with his sword. The commercial ends by saying “knights still ride stallions”. He took that knight in shining armor part to heart and HE was the one who showed up at my parents’ door. I opened it and all he said was “I couldn’t let you be alone on Valentine’s day.” He was my best friend before that. In that one sentence be became the love of my life. A year later, on Valentine’s day my knight told me for the first time he loved me. Seventeen years later he is still my best friend and every once in awhile I turn around and realize I’ve fallen in love with him all over again.
Angelic Forecast ~ #75
“Watch,” the Cherub instructs.
We float closer to the obelisk that looks like it’s been carved out of obsidian stone. My breath rages inward. My eyes widen even more as a slender silver-gleaming antenna rises from the top point of the obelisk. At least, I think it’s an antenna. A breath later, arcs of light zap outward.
“Omygod... what...?
“Keep watching.”
Gradually, the arcs become lightning bolts. More than that, they reach farther and father, starkly beautiful against the gray-black sky.
“No!” the whisper bursts out of me. Streaks of light shoot toward Earth, narrowing to a funnel shape.
“Where?” My heart trips inside my throat.
After a whirring sensation, I see a geyser. “Yellowstone?” I ask.
~~~~~~

During the following week you will, more than likely, feel as though you’re riding a whirlwind through time. You are, in the sense that this is a point in our history where the ‘big’ worm turns. Many trends and forces are coming to a head, colliding and forming what could be called a Global Tornado.
Think ~ you’re driving on the highway, and the darkest, most monstrous tornado ever created spins toward you. What action do you take? Stop and dive for the nearest low point? Reverse, and get the heck out of there? Find the nearest shelter? Do you save someone in the tornado’s path?
Whatever decisions you make, the time has come to ride the tiger that is your inner courage, your inner spirit. For, there is nothing else.

Mini Valentine’s Day Forecast ~

Valentine’s Day this year, is one of taking action. The more assertively you take action to demonstrate your love and your caring, the greater will be the rewards for everyone involved.
Plus, any manner of communication direct from the heart, whether funny, poetic, or sentimental will become a priceless memory that bonds you to your loved ones and to the beloved one of your heart.
If you’ve ever wanted be someone’s Funny Valentine, this is the year to do it, to creatively shine in a romantic and humorous way.

Wednesday's Words for February 3, 2010

Yesterday was a day eagerly anticipated each year in the Ashbury family: It was Groundhog Day. On the way to work yesterday morning, my beloved chanted his Groundhog Day mantra, “cloudy, cloudy, cloudy” in his attempt to influence the weather and thereby the prognosticating rodent. I know my eldest also had his fingers crossed for a positive outcome. Knowing him, he didn’t utter a mantra, but likely spent some time looking up recipes for groundhog stew—so the critter could know the price of failure. And truly, we awoke to overcast skies and great hope.

Too bad those overcast skies didn’t appear over Wiarton, Ontario or Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Sadly, and in a rare show of solidarity, both groundhogs saw their shadows which means six more weeks of winter, instead of an early spring.

“Not too bad,” the man on the radio said, “it’s been a good winter so far, so it’s not like we really needed the break of an early spring this year.”

I’m a writer, well acquainted with literary devices, and that radio D. J. demonstrated one in his pronouncement. “Good winter” is an oxymoron if ever I heard one.

Now that is just my personal opinion, of course. I hate winter. I loved it when I was a child, but then when I was a child winter had fun things to do. There was mostly skating for me, as I rarely went tobogganing, and I don’t really recall if I ever actually owned a toboggan. Yes, later when I lived in the same house I grew up in, raising my own family, husband and kids would go to the Quarry property behind us and slide down the big hill. But as a child, I was forbidden to go near the place.

No matter, there had always been skating on the pond across the road from our house. Often, coming in out of the cold on days my mother had off from the hospital (she was a nurse) meant coming in to wonderful homemade soups and hot cocoa. So I do have fond memories of winter.

And as an adult living in Canada I appreciate that there are many people whose livelihoods depend on our having a proper helping of cold temperatures and lots of snow every year. But that doesn’t mean that personally I have to like it.

Just when I was grumbling into my coffee cup about rotten rodents and winter doldrums, my spirits got an unexpected boost. While surfing the Web I learned of a third groundhog! It seems that the great State of New York also has a weather predicting rodent. His name is Chuck – Staten Island Chuck – and he has an accuracy record that blows old Phil right out of the...um....burrow. It seems that Chuck has been on the job for 29 years and has been right 22 of those years – that’s 76%! Phil, on the other hand, doesn’t even have a passing grade, being right only 39% of the time.

Staten Island Chuck predicts an early spring! Yes!

Here, now, is proof that what I’ve always said is true. Everything is a choice. You can look at the glass as half empty, or half full. You can choose to believe one groundhog, or you can choose to believe the other.

I’m the sort of person who, when it comes to winter, hedges her bets. For example, I consider winter to run from October 1 to March 31 inclusive. Six months. Yes, I know the calendar says three. But what does it know, really? It says that in Las Vegas, Indianapolis, and Key West, too. Now, maybe in those places, the three-months-per-season average works.

Take my word on it; it doesn’t work where I live.

The advantage of my approach is that sometimes, we don’t get real cold winter weather until the middle of December and then I can say to myself “when this month is over, winter is half done already!” Thus, we are now four-sixths the way through this dreaded season. And it was Groundhog Day yesterday.

Surely, that has to be a sign of something?

That is, something other than an indication that those of us who await anxiously the so-called predictions of a furry critter really need to get a life.

Love,
Morgan

Have you found your true love?

Your First Love

Do you remember your first love? I'm not talking about your first kiss, or your first... ahem... never mind. I'm talking about your first, can't-stop-thinking-about, can't-imagine-living-without, true to your heart, love. I'll give you a moment to recall that one person or persons you still think about every now and then. Got him/her? Great, moving on...

I had three great loves. I met my first love in seventh grade (yes, I know) and he was utterly perfect in every way. I'll call him 'T' to protect his privacy, just in case there are several out there who know him. I was over the moon for him. So much, in fact, that I gave myself a homemade tattoo (not my brightest move) of his name. We started "going" together and stayed together until he moved away the summer before we went into the ninth grade. I was devastated and swore I'd never love again. It just hurt too much. When you are only fifteen and have your heart ripped out for the first time, you literally believe your world is crashing in around you. I cried that entire summer.

And then I met 'M' as a senior in high school. 'M' was an older man--okay, so he graduated before me, but still--and I fell hard. 'M' and I worked together and immediately hit it off. He pursued me and I have to admit, a girl likes the attention. Eventually I said yes to a date, and BOOM! I was a goner. We moved in together after high school and I thought it couldn't get any better. We were in love, blissfully happy, playing house, etc... 'M' was my first grown-up love, my first at making love, and my first at so many other things. To an eighteen-year-old, when you find that one love, you are positive you don't need anything else. Even as things started to fall apart between us, I refused to believe it. We were perfect for each other, so how could he possibly not love me any longer?

'M' revealed his true colors on my nineteenth birthday. I came home from work fully expecting him there with flowers, or dinner made, or something. He wasn't even there. I called his friend, who told me 'M' was there, but didn't want to talk to me, that he just wanted a night away from me. On my birthday. Okay, I thought, everyone needs space. I went to my parents' house, but they were out. I was alone on my birthday and miserable as I drove back to my ignorantly blissful life with 'M'. He was home when I returned and said those four words no one wants to hear. "We need to talk." He then proceeded to inform me that I was loud, obnoxious, immature, and that he didn't like the fact that my jeans were starting to get tight. "You need to work out more. I don't want you getting fat." Well, well, well. He didn't want me to get fat. He didn't like me. What he loved about me in the beginning (You are so fun! I love that you aren't afraid to be yourself.) now irritated him. I was broken. Completely, no holds barred, broken.

It took me time to stop crying over 'M'. I told myself I wouldn't cry over another man. Screw it. It wasn't worth it. I didn't need love. I was a strong, independent woman. I'd go back to school, get a fabulous degree, and never look back...

And then I met 'D'. Oh, did I meet 'D'. I didn't just meet him. I was blown away by him. I'd never seen a man look so good in Wranglers and cowboy boots. He raced jeeps off road, he love to dance like a fool, and didn't have any problem being the same person in public as he was in private. Having been burned before, I was leery of getting involved in another relationship, but the heart wants what it wants. I fell in love with 'D'. He drove me crazy, both in a good and bad way. Spending one day with 'D' blew the socks off all the time I spent with 'M' or 'T'. I realize now that the feelings I had for 'T' or 'M' pale in comparison to the feelings I have for 'D'.

I'm still with 'D', after eighteen years, and he still gives me delicious chills when he comes up behind me and nuzzles my neck. I still get butterflies when I see him. We still cuddle, kiss (which totally grosses out the kids!), and are really, truly in love. He is the inspiration for all the heroes in my stories. Don't believe me? Read the first in my NASSD Counter-Terrorist Agency series, AT ANY COST.

I realize now how much fun it is to be in love when both parties feel the same. If you haven't found that first true love yet, I hope you do soon. There's nothing like it.
