Out of the Attic with Steam Toys by Destiny Blaine

Steampunk was the topic on deck today at Love Romances Cafe so I dropped by to post a couple of clips from Steam Toys and thought I'd leave one here, too. This novella was originally published in 2010 and Siren Publishing published the second edition in 2012. The scene below takes place in a crowded Las Vegas restaurant. Edward, our hero, is having dinner with his leading lady, but he isn't convinced she's a ghost.

I hope you enjoy this excerpt.

Steam Toys (MFM)

“They think you’re crazy now, don’t they?” Heidi asked, using her long fingernails to rake breadcrumbs off the blue linen tablecloth.
Edward couldn’t take his eyes off her. In fact, he’d barely heard a word she’d said until the waiter returned. “Is everything all right, Mr. Brady?”
“Yes, fine. Thank you,” he replied, hoping to dismiss the young man right away.
The waiter made a pointed indication at the untouched plate directly across from Edward’s. “Will your guest be joining you later for dinner?”
Edward met her gaze. Heidi shrugged. “Up to you, sugar. I spent my entire life being every man’s dirty little secret. No reason for you to be the exception. As a reminder, no one else can see me.”
“That will be all,” Edward deadpanned, reaching across the table.
The waiter took a moment to stare down at the open space separating the dinner plates. Edward watched Heidi, faintly aware of the man towering over them. “Yes?” he asked, looking up abruptly.
The waiter studied the empty chair across from Edward and then shrugged. He walked away moments later shaking his head and mumbling, “Money and madness go hand in hand in Las Vegas.”
Heidi squeezed his fingers. “You’re a thoughtful fellow, Edward, but trust me. I’ve ruined many a man’s reputation. You’re considered a genius in this town. You don’t want this city to turn its back on you right now. You’re on the verge of something great, and I want to come along for the ride.” She slid her arm under the table and touched his knee. “And I want a lot of rides with you, Edward.”
He was ready to negotiate the terms.
“You do?” Edward asked, engaging himself in what must’ve looked like an odd, one-sided conversation. By the time he realized what he was doing, half the restaurant’s customers were turning around, staring at him with marked curiosity.
Heidi tilted her head toward some of the patrons. “You’re seated at a table for two. You requested a couple of wine glasses. Two meals have been served. This seat is vacant, and you’re holding a hand that doesn’t exist.” She looked down at their entwined fingers. “Your thumb is jerking as if you’re massaging my wrist. You don’t think this is newsworthy for the Las Vegas Lifestyle Magazine?”
“You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen,” Edward admitted. “If I can see you, then they must.”
“No, Edward,” she said, standing.
He stood, too, as a polite gesture.
“I don’t exist in their world. You’re the only one who can see me.”
“Then I’m one lucky guy.”
Heidi held her shoulders back. A quick tilt of her head sent ringlets tumbling across her shoulders. “That depends on who you ask at the moment. In public situations like this, I recommend that you listen and let me do the talking. Some here are ruthless snakes when it comes to tearing down a man’s reputation, especially one like yours. They’ll be anxious to poke fun at the crazy man, the gentleman who inevitably will catch the adoring eyes of their women because of his deep pockets.”
“What’s that mean, exactly?”
“You’re about to make millions, the kind of money this city hasn’t seen since the days of Howard Hughes, and you’re acting as crazy as Hughes himself.”
“I’m not hungry,” he told her, feeling like he’d known her at another point and time in his life. “I want to take you home and—”
“And what, Edward? Get to know me?”
“Yes.”
She took a deep breath. “Oh for heaven’s sake, sit down and finish your meal and then meet me at the curb. As long as you’re looking at me like I’m dessert, there’s no way you’ll enjoy your dinner. Besides, you’re drawing too much attention.”
“I would think someone in your line of work craves center stage,” he pointed out, snapping at her.
Heidi leaned forward. “Careful, Edward, the patrons are staring now.”
“I don’t care,” he said, tossing his napkin aside and following her through the restaurant. “You think I don’t know what this is about?”
“I doubt it,” she answered, never breaking her stride. “If you had any idea what I need from you, I don’t think you’d risk your reputation and follow a ghost out of the hottest dining spot in the city.”
“What do you mean by that? What do you want from me?”

4.5 Blue Ribbons for 'A Summer Bewitchment' by Lindsay Townsend

Dottie of Romance Junkies has reviewed 'A Summer Bewitchment' and given it 4.5 Blue Ribbons:

An intriguing tale, A SUMMER BEWITCHMENT, the second book in author Lindsay Townsend’s THE KNIGHT AND THE WITCH series, is a suspense-filled, sensual historical romance infused with a bit of magic. This delightful sequel to THE SNOW BRIDE can be read as a standalone, but I suggest reading the books in order. Magnus and Elfrida, despite their difference in rank, are a wonderful beauty and the beast match. The chemistry between them is scorching hot and their love for each other shines through, so I could not help rooting for them.

After devouring the first novel, THE SNOW BRIDE, I was delighted to be able to re-visit these two delightful characters. Witty repartee, engaging characters, intrigue, magical spells, romance and love fill the pages, sweeping the reader up into the midst of the story. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of A SUMMER BEWITCHMENT. I highly recommend it!

Paranormal with a Steamy Twist

Siren-Bookstrand published Steam Toys, a paranormal story with strong steampunk elements. If you’re in the market for a cute and sexy ménage novella, pick up your copy of Steam Toys.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Blurb:

An overdose of steam tosses a disgruntled ghost back into the present. A successful brothel owner in her former life, Heidi Labeidi materializes in front of Edward Brady, an eccentric mad scientist.

Edward and Heidi become acquainted. He takes her out in public and discovers a shocking truth. No one else can see her. After a public catastrophe, Edward’s partner, Barron Capwell, shows up on his doorstep making demands. Relieved to discover his partner can see his houseguest, Edward considers what to do with the outspoken dead madam.

Heidi has a few ideas. A ghost is pretty assertive after thirty sexless years have come and gone.

Eager to please Edward and Barron, Heidi offers her assistance, but it comes at a price. Once the men realize she’s the only thing standing between their future and potential demise, Barron and Edward succumb to Heidi’s advances and she fulfills their every desire.

Excerpt:

Las Vegas, 2010

Heidi Labeidi, the controversial proprietor of The Love Parlor, a popular gentleman’s club on the outskirts of Las Vegas, was reported missing yesterday morning at five o’clock.

Miss Labeidi’s bar manager, Stan Graves, returned from a two-week European holiday and discovered disgruntled staff members and inner company chaos. According to Graves, Miss Labeidi had been acting “somewhat peculiar” in recent months, spending less time at The Love Parlor and relying on her staff to make deposits and handle customer relations.

Graves became concerned after he discovered Miss Labeidi had not visited the gentleman’s club in over a week. Mr. Graves stopped by Miss Labeidi’s luxurious loft in Las Vegas, let himself in, collected over a week’s worth of mail, and discovered her cat near death.

According to Graves, Miss Labeidi has few enemies but has been noted for her outrageous spending habits. She’s a suspected drug user and frequents the casinos whenever she isn’t working. Graves said recent mysterious behavior concerned several of the women working for The Love Parlor. Employees contributed Miss Labeidi’s mood swings to menopause, stating Miss Labeidi’s change-of-life experiences were often intolerable.

Based on findings at Miss Labeidi’s home, police are treating this as a missing persons case and remain optimistic. Individuals with information about Miss Labeidi’s last known whereabouts are asked to contact the authorities as soon as possible.

* * * *

Heidi glared at the open newspaper spread across her antique dining room table. Oh what she’d give to choke Stan Graves with her bare hands!

Stan not only arranged her disappearance, but he’d taken over her club, her home, and even had the audacity to place Rocks, her beloved Persian cat, at the foot of her bed while he romanced one hopeful starlet after another. The poor thing must’ve been terribly traumatized!

To add insult to personal injury, “those girls” who’d reportedly mentioned her mood swings—which she’d never experienced—were now laid up in her king-size bed fucking the man she’d once loved.

Heidi plotted her revenge. Retribution tasted bitter until a woman dished up a hearty serving for the man most deserving of a provoked female’s retaliation. Heidi would carefully plan a counterblow, and when Stan least expected avengement, she’d propel some fundamental disgrace his way and watch the light dim in Stan’s smug face!

No one—not even Stan Graves—held the power to destroy what she’d worked years to build. If Stan needed a change of pace, he shouldn’t have gone to all this trouble. Heidi would’ve gladly knocked him back down to nothing where he belonged.

She narrowed her gaze on the article again. The boldness of those Las Vegas Tribune reporters! How could they do this and get by with it? To think the last thing anyone in Las Vegas would remember about her was that she was going through the change of life. Bah!

She’d let them see a new woman. Yes indeed, she’d show them what happened to those who messed with Heidi Labeidi. She’d prove her point all right, just as soon as she figured out how to let folks know she was still among the living.

That presented a slight problem. Technically, she was now considered a ghost, and death wasn’t exactly easy to overcome.

Here is another new excerpt to tempt you:

Elfrida stirred sluggishly, unable to remember where she was. Her back ached, and the rest of her body burned. She opened her eyes and sat up with a jerk, thinking of Christina.

Her head felt to be bobbing like an acorn cup in a stream, and her vision swam. As she tried to swing her legs, her sense of dizzy falling increased, becoming worse as she closed her eyes. She lashed out in the darkness, her flailing hands and feet connecting with straw, dusty hay, and ancient pelts.

“Christina?” she hissed, listening intently and praying now that the monster had brought her to the same place it had taken her sister.

She heard nothing but her own breath, and when she held that, nothing at all.

“Christina?” Fearing to reach out in this blackness that was more than night and dreading what she might find, Elfrida forced herself to stretch her arms. She trailed her fingers out into the ghastly void, tracing the unseen world with trembling hands.

Her body shook more than her hands, but she ignored the shuddering of her limbs, closed her eyes like a blind man, and searched.

She lay on a pallet, she realized, full of crackling, dry grass. When she scented and tasted the air, there was no blood. She did not share the space with grisly corpses.

I am alone and unfettered. Now her heart had stopped thudding in her ears, she listened again, hearing no one else. Chanting a charm to see in the dark, she tried again to shift her feet.

Light spilled into her eyes like scalding milk as a door opened and a massive figure lurched across the threshold. Elfrida launched herself at freedom, hurling a fistful of straw at the looming beast and ducking out for the light.

She fell instead, her legs buckling, her last sight that of softly falling snow.

* * * *

Magnus gathered the woman before she pitched facedown into the snow, returning her swiftly to the rough bed within the hut. Her tiny, bird-boned form terrified him. Clutching her was like ripping a fragile wood anemone up from its roots.

And she had fought him, wind-flower or not. She had charged at him.

“I wish, lass, that you would listen to me. I am not the Forest Grendel, nor have wish to be, nor ever have been.”

Just as earlier, in the clearing where he had first come upon her, a brilliant shock of life and color in a white, dead world, the woman gave no sign of hearing. She was cold again, freezing, while in his arms she had steamed with fever. He tugged off his cloak and bundled her into it, then piled his firewood and kindling onto the bare hearth.

A few strikes of his flints and he had a fire. He set snow to melt in the helmet he was using as a cauldron. He swept more dusty hay up from the floor and, sneezing, packed it round the still little figure.

No beast on two or four legs would hunt tonight, so that was one worry less. Finding this lean-to hut in the forest had been a godsend, but it would be cold.

Magnus went back out into the snow and led his horse into the hut, spreading what feed he had brought with him. He kept the door shut with his saddle, rubbed the palfrey down with the bay’s own horse blanket, and looked about for a lantern.

There was none, just as there were no buckets, nor wooden bowls hanging from the eaves. But, abandoned as it surely had been, the place was well roofed, and no snow swirled in through the wood and wattle walls. Whistling, Magnus dug through his pack and found a flask of ale, some hard cheese, two wizened apples, and a chunk of dark rye bread. He spoke softly to his horse, then looked again at the woman.

She was breathing steadily now, and her lips and cheeks had more color. By the glittering, rising fire he saw her as he had first in the forest clearing, an elf-child of beauty and grace, a willing sacrifice to the monster. Kneeling beside her, he longed to stroke her vivid red hair and kiss the small dimple in her chin. In sleep she had the calm, flawless face of a Madonna of Outremer and the bright locks of a Magdalene.

He had guessed who she was—the witch of the three villages, the good witch driven to desperation. Coming upon her in that snowfield, tied between two trees like a crucified child of fairy, his temper had been a black storm against the villagers for sparing their skins by flaying hers. Then he had seen her face, recognized that wild, stark, sunken-cheeked grief, seen the loose bonds and the terrible “feast,” and had understood.

Another young woman has been taken by the beast, someone you love.

She—Elfrida, that was her name, he remembered it now—Elfrida was either very foolish or very powerful, to offer herself as bait.

“Gracie McKeever’s novel Sexual Healing for Three is a masterpiece. The novel is wonderfully written. The reader is captured right from the beginning. The excitement maintains until the very end. 4 1/2 Cherries for Sexual Healing for Three!

“Ms. McKeever writes a gripping novel about coming to terms with who we are and what we want out of our lives. Her characters are unique and memorable. They stay with you once the book closes. Her scenes are rich with details, keeping the reader firmly entrenched in the story. The love scenes are graphic, but filled with passion. You know these people love each other and are afraid to upset the balance in their lives...

If you want a steamy novel about learning how to be yourself, and how to accept what you can’t change, then Sexual Healing for Three is the novel for you. I give this work 4 ½ Cherries.” Tiger Lily for Whipped Cream Reviews.

5 Lips for Sexual Healing for Three!

“The different voices gave me insight into each character and each person was believable and real to me. I enjoyed the sex scenes. They were believable and I liked that not every love scene involved all three of them. There were scenes where Donna and only Russ or Chance were making love. I also liked that each man spoke to Donna of his love for her and that Donna gradually began to realize that while the sex was good with only one of the brothers, it was better emotionally for them all to be together. While the happy ending is unconventional it does satisfy and provide hope for their future. I will definitely read more of Gracie C. McKeever.” 5 Lips, Sheila, for Two Lips Reviews. “In Beneath the Surface, McKeever created a passionate love story riddled with themes of redemption, forgiveness, and acceptance. With her signature touch of paranormal, characters lightly touch other world elements but maintain normalcy, an effective touch. Sexual Healing for Three - Available Now!

Blurb:

The Matchmaker:

Angela Calminetti, mother of five, New Age practitioner and gifted psychic and telepath, is proud of her family ties and does everything she can to make sure that all of her younger siblings are as happy in love and marriage as she is…whether they want her to or not.

Note: Each book is written to stand alone.

Sexual Healing for Three

Donna Vega is a dedicated woman on a mission. Matchmaking sister Angela is determined the mission include a love-life with Dominant and architectural landscaper Russ Merrick and his younger brother, Chance Novak, a gifted and sensitive ER doctor. The mission goes awry, however, when Donna lands on the radar of a psychotic employee obsessed with Russ.

Escaping an abusive past, Donna Vega is determined never to be the victim of a man's whims again. She doesn't have the inclination or time for one man, much less two.

Wiccan and drowning survivor, Chance Novak has inherited psychic gifts that he's wary of using. When he meets Donna at a domestic abuse seminar, Chance recognizes an injured soul that he'd like to heal. But can he get past Donna's armor to make her see him as more than just a colleague?

Russell Merrick has always put everyone's needs before his own, pursuing a vanilla ideal of wedded bliss. But now since his divorce can he abide sharing the one woman who could fulfill his every sexual fetish, when his younger brother is the other man?

More importantly, can Russ deflect the twisted attentions of a killer who's willing to go through Chance and Donna to get to him?

Excerpt (Adult)

Donna stepped closer, wrapping her arms around his waist as she rested her head against his chest. “You have to go.”

It was simultaneously a statement and a question and let him know exactly how confused she was by all that had happened, not just tonight, but the entire day. Yep. Time and space was what they all needed.

Shit. Being the understanding, self-sacrificing good guy seriously sucked sometimes. He thought he had gotten over this little weakness after he’d made his confession to Suzie and gotten divorced. But that ever-present need to care for another at the expense of his own happiness was ingrained, probably going back to his trying to make up to Chance all that he had lost as a kid.
Russ nodded in response and gently squeezed Donna to him, relishing the vanilla scent wafting up from her hair and skin. He trailed his hands down her back to her ass, cupped the full, firm cheeks, and lifted her off the floor, into his arms to whisper in her ear.

“I have to get back to my kids. I don’t want them to wake up in the morning and I’m not there. Otherwise…” He let the sentence hang, not sure himself what he would do if he stayed, just assuming that she’d let him.
Donna nodded. “Duty calls.”

“Chance will take care of you. And you should let him.”

“Is that an order?”

He pulled back to look at her, remembering a couple of instances during their limited scene when she had paused with a look on her face that said she took umbrage with his tone, instances where he had doubted she’d do his bidding.

He had been so turned on at the idea of her defiance, had hoped that she would push his limits so that he could begin to push hers. But Chance had been present.

What would have happened had his brother not been there? How far would he and Donna have gone? Might they still be at it, Russ properly initiating her into the world of Dominance and submission and teaching her about the woman, the sexual being, she could be?

Russ shook his head, trying to erase the vision of her facedown and spread-eagle on the bed, her beautiful, round ass, flushed and warm from his spanking, pointing to the sky, totally inviting and open to his control and touch.

“It’s an order,” he said, keeping all lightness and teasing out of his voice, purposefully using his commanding Dom voice.

She looked at him but didn’t say anything, and in that silent moment, Russ wished like hell that he had Chance’s gifts and could read her.

What must that be like? How did his brother handle it without totally losing himself in other people’s thoughts, in other people’s lives? How did he not exploit it as often as he could?

“I can take care of myself,” Donna finally said.

“We’re going to have to talk about that in more depth the next time we’re together.”

“My feelings aren’t going to change on the subject.”

“Maybe they will once we discuss it.”

“You think you’re going to convince me to be a sniveling, weak female?”

“There’s nothing weak about needing someone to lean on.”

“Who said I want you to be that someone?”

Russ smiled, his cock hardening the more she challenged him.

Damn, he had missed this—the give and take, the negotiation process, the role-playing, the final submission of a bottom when she realized that she had met her match and Dominant and was meant to obey him no matter how much it went against her liberal upbringing.

Russ slowly loosened his hold and let her slide down the front of his body until her feet touched the parquet floor. His glance didn’t leave her face, and he liked that she didn’t take her gaze off of him as he slid his hand down the front of her snug shorts, even though her eyes widened and she gasped as he brushed the back of his fingers against her.

She was wet, sopping, and he leered as he turned her around, pulled her back against him, and bent his knees to cradle his erection against the giving solidity of her ass without removing his hand from her shorts. He slipped two fingers inside her to the second knuckle, rubbed her clitoris with his thumb, and closed his eyes when she whimpered.

“That says you want me to be that someone.”

“That is just a physiological reaction.” She panted.

“It’s just sex, huh?”

She nodded, evidently too busy groaning as he stroked her to articulate further.

“Believe that if you want to, Donna. We both know the truth.” He didn’t give her a chance to respond before he removed his hand, spun her back around to facing him, and claimed her mouth with a punishing kiss—all tongue and teeth and invasion—a lesson and a reprimand.

When he released her, they were both breathless, though he hid his state a lot better than she did, if he did say so himself.

He backed towards the front door, never taking his gaze off hers as he lifted his fingers to his mouth, blatantly licked his fingers, and caught sight of her saucer-wide eyes and unhinged jaw right before opening the door to leave.

Let the training begin.

“Eternal Designs is not only an action-packed thriller, but it’s also a tightfisted tale of suspense and intrigue. Gracie C. McKeever continues to amaze with her uncanny ability to weave a tantalizing tapestry of unique characters, enrapturing plotlines, and cinematic detail. She has mastered the difficult technique of presenting this literary trifecta in such a powerfully compelling way time and again, and she only gets better with time. In each tale that she crafts, the vividness of her characters and the vigor of her storytelling create exciting, enticing worlds to which the reader will long to escape time and again. Highly recommended.” 5 Stars, Josee Morgan for Apex Reviews.
