Cassandra Pierce visits The Steam Room

The Steam Room welcomes Cassandra Pierce!

TSR: Tell us about Loving Two Vampires.

Cassandra: For my second entry in the Darkisle series, I wanted to do something different—to challenge myself. I’d never done a ménage before, and I wanted to kick up the heat level a notch. The whole story came to me in a flash one day—plot, characters, everything. The story practically told itself! My task was simply to write it down!

TSR: What draws you to vampires?

Cassandra: They’re sexy, scary, and are essentially a whole different species. Yet their human core—shaped by historical forces modern people can never fully appreciate—remains, ready to be tapped by the right circumstances and people. They offer a bottomless treasure chest from which to draw stories.

TSR: What are some traits that your hero/heroine must have?

Cassandra: I like strong, feisty, sharp-tongued people of both genders. Yet their cores must be informed by compassion and they must have the capacity to love wildly, madly, and forever. In the case of vampires, that’s a long time.

TSR: What inspired Darkisle?

Cassandra: I wanted to do a Gothic romance with all the trappings—creepy house, gloomy and claustrophobic small town, people with lurid secrets and hidden, smoldering passions. Vampires seemed a natural extension of that atmosphere.

Being a huge, lifelong Dark Shadows fan didn’t hurt either.

TSR: Tell us about Love in the Shadows.

Cassandra: It’s a Yahoo loop I started for readers and authors to discuss and promo Gothic and paranormal books(e and print). I’m hoping to start some writing workshops in the loop this summer. I hope readers will join us!

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/loveintheshadows/

TSR: When you’re not writing, what’s your favorite thing to do?

Cassandra: I’m into sculpting, doll-making, and collecting vintage action figures, especially Megos. I’m also partial to tinkering with computers, both PCs and Macs, though I don’t talk about that much for fear of being asked to fix everyone’s computer. Finally, I do a lot of animal charity work and rescue, rehabilitating and re-homing abused and abandoned cats and dogs. I’ve personally saved over 100 furbabies so far.

TSR: What’s next for you?

Cassandra: I’m working on a couple of science fiction e-romances right now. Captain Gareth’s Mates, the first one in the Terran Border Patrol series I’m planning, has just been released from Siren in December 2010. I’m also tinkering with a steampunk idea suggested to me by my fellow Siren author, Rachel Clark.

And, of course, I am planning Darkisle III!

TSR Welcomes Daisy Harris

Let's give a warm TSR welcome to Daisy Harris!

TSR:Tell us about your Ocean Shifters books.

Daisy:I wanted to tell a stories set by the water because Mere Temptation was aboutcoming home to the crazy place you grew up. Since I was born in Miami and lived the first few years of my life in a little house across the street from a harbor, that place to come home to, for me, was the seaside.

Oceanside communities are so complex- there's always a vacation crowd, the townies, the people who make a living from the water, the drifters, etc. I created the mere, the dragon empire, the shark-shifters all as part of that landscape- different peoples with shared and often contentious histories.

So the Ocean shifters world contains a myriad of politics, power dynamics, and changing economic landscapes. And how that plays out depends largely on where the story is set. Mere Temptation took place in the Caribbean, Mere Passion the Arctic, Shark Bait was set mostly on the water, in dories, yachts, and old rusted fishing boats that went from north of Scotland all the way to Panama City.

TSR:Mermaids are pretty common, but you go way beyond that. How are your mermaids different from what people expect?

Daisy:Well first off, my mere are half dolphin, not half-fish. That's an important distinction in my world because to call a mere a "fish" is a racial slur. Mere are marine mammals, and very proud of that fact. My mere are also shape-shifting, growing legs in human form.

The most important aspect of my mere is that the females can become fully human. If a mere female looses her virginity to a human, she becomes human. If she looses it to a dragon, shark, or mere she becomes mere. And though adult mere can take human form, they can't survive very far from the water, so their prospects are limited. (That was a big part of my plot in Mere Temptation, the first book in the series.)

TSR:It cracks me up that Mere Passion has an ‘interracial’ tag, yet there’s nothing for interspecies. What surprised you most about the publishing process?

Daisy:Yeah, I laughed about that! It is a very interracial story- the races being dragons and mere. They have tons of bad blood between them. Dragons are very dark-skinned, and mere are very pale, so they look different in human form, but the interracial tag did amuse me. I hope none of my readers were let down!

Otherwise, it's hard to say what surprised me most. This whole past year of writing has been one big whirlwind, so everything is new and surprising!

TSR:I noticed you departed from your ‘Mere’ title pattern. I did this as well with one of my series. How do you decide on titles?

Daisy:I knew nothing about choosing titles back when I chose Mere Temptation and MerePassion! I was so new to the world, and in retrospect might have chosen something less inter-changeable. I've noticed people getting much more excited about Shark Bait than my Mere books. Part of that is because people lovesharks. smile But I think it's also a stronger, more memorable name.

Moving forward, I'm going to put more effort into naming. It's the first thing a reader sees, after all!

TSR:Most people put pieces of themselves in their characters. What favorite pieceof yourself have you put into which character?

Daisy:Hmmmm…. That's tough. I loved channeling my trash-talking, tough-girl self into Alara from Mere Passion, but I also loved playing up my pushover, geeky self for Sophia in Shark Bait. I'd probably have to go with Sophia though.

What I love about her story is that she's an inherently submissive, waifish, nerd, and that she doesn't need to stop being that way for a man to love her. She (a dragon)comes from a race where boldness and strength are valued above all, but Raider (the shark-shifter) loves her not only despite her weakness, but also because of it.

As women, we're so often told that we'll never succeed if we don't do blah, blah, blah, or become blah, blah, blah. But there's a place for everyone and someone who'll love you just as you are. That's the most romantic thing I can imagine!

TSR: When you’re not writing, what’s your favorite thing to do?

Daisy:I love reading. I'm also totally addicted to Twitter. Other than that? Hanging out with my kids, going out for wine and cheese, bike riding.

TSR: What’s next for you?

Daisy:I have a Valentine's Day story coming out as part of an anthology with Sizzler Editions. I also have a zombie-robot hybrid story that should go out forsubmission soon. And I'm writing a centaur short story. I love writing unusual types of characters, and putting new spins on old stories.

TSR: Tell us about your Bliss Series.

Sophie: Nights in Bliss is a series about a very quirky Colorado town and its unusual citizens. Bliss is a town where anything goes. It was founded by hippies in the sixties and now is home to artists, nudists and the occasional conspiracy theorist. Of course, it also has super hot, willing-to-share cowboys. The first cycle of the series involves four friends who grew up together in Bliss. Three to Ride is about the cowboy twins, Max and Rye Harper. Two to Love is about Callie Sheppard and her men. The final book in this part of the series is One to Keep about Stefan Talbot and Jennifer Waters. It’s much more BDSM oriented than the other two. Hopefully it will be out sometime this spring.

TSR: All of your works include aspects of light BDSM. What draws you to the lifestyle/topic?

Sophie: I love the power exchange. I think there’ssomething intensely romantic about BDSM. It’s all about communication. It’s all about being honest about what we want and need from the people we love. What could be sexier than that? Besides, I’m a girl who appreciates a good spanking.

TSR: You became a Siren star relatively quickly. How does it affect the kinds of writing you plan to do?

Sophie: It means I’m really committed to my series. I have four books in my BDSM-themed Texas Sirens series and I haven’t put a limit on Bliss. It will be a while before I take a break and write something new. Siren has really turned out to be a great place to be. I wouldn’t be anywhere else. The fans are so loyal. They’ve been lovely.

TSR: I noticed you’re a fan of Glee. What do you like about the show? Any other favorites?

Sophie: I love that it makes me feel. Even when it’s corny, I’m willing to go with it because I want to be there emotionally. I think it’s a neat trick. It’s a musical, but it relies on music we already know, so there’s a very individual component to each episode because we all have different reactions to the songs they use. It’s why Moulin Rouge worked so brilliantly. As for TV, actually most of what I love is SciFi. I know it sounds weird, but I’m a geek girl at heart. I love Doctor Who, The Walking Dead, Fringe and oldies like Buffy and Farscape.

TSR: In Away From Me, you touch on a serious issue, breast cancer, that hits close to home for a lot of people. What inspired you to use breast cancer as a plot device?

Sophie: A friend of mine had a scare with breast cancer and I kind of went from there. I liked the idea of a physically imperfect heroine. She’s torn up on the outside while my hero has been shredded on the inside. Neither wants to show the other their scars. It takes love and trust to get them to open up. And I hope it didn’t come across as a simple plot device. Gaby is a survivor. She’s a woman who takes what life has given her and tries to make the best of it. I think everyone who has dealt with cancer finds that it changes their lives. My family has a long history of cancer, so I know I could very well deal with it one day soon. I guess I hope I’m as brave as Gaby. She’s what I would aspire to be.

TSR: What are the pros and cons of series writing?

Sophie: Now there’s a question to ponder while I switch from one series to the other. The pros are many. As a writer you get to world build over a series of books. You get to really know these characters you’re writing about. On the con side – you have to know what you’re doing down the line because once that first book is published there’s no going back. The series starts to build its own history and you have to be aware of that. The book I’m writing right now is about a 32-year-old artist and a 23-year-old waitress. If I had really thought about it when I wrote Three to Ride, I would have made her older. Now that I’m writing Stef and Jen’s book, her age is a big factor. So you need be mindful when you start a series that you don’t write yourself into a corner.

TSR: What’s next for you?

Sophie: I have a novella coming out in January called Playing the Field. It’s a complete left turn from what I normally write. It’s a fun sex romp. Then in February the third Texas Sirens book Siren Enslaved comes out. Then I go back to Bliss with One to Keep.

The Steam Room is proud to present author Jillian Chantal.

TSR: Tell us about Solo Honeymoon.

Jillian: It's a story based in London, a fictional vineyard in Italy and New York City. It has an element of romantic suspense. The father of the heroine is a one-named singer based in part on the 1960s icon, Donovan. When Emma, the heroine, finds her fiancé naked with her bridesmaid three days before her wedding, her father tells her she should go on the honeymoon that was his gift to the couple. He feels she needs to get away to heal her broken heart. She goes with her best friend who encourages her to have some fun with an Italian man. Emma has no intention of doing so, but the best laid plans can go awry.

TSR: Where did the idea come from?

Jillian: Most of the time, in my writing, my heroes come to me first. This hero, Dario DeLuca, came to me as a ballroom dancer. One of my dearest friends is a ballroom dancer and her partner/instructor is Italian. He's an excellent dancer and is mesmerizing to watch. He almost seems bored but it's his job to showcase the woman and he's amazing at doing that. I've watched her dance with him and the idea of an Italian hero that loved ballroom dancing came to me. I'm a total pantser and the story just developed from there.

TSR: What are some traits that your hero/heroine must have?

Jillian: Most of my heroes are in some need of redemption or they think they are anyway. I like a very strong hero, one with ingrained opinions. He must also be deeply honest and kind- even if that isn't readily apparent.

As to my heroines, they are usually a bit sassy. I like an independent heroine as well. Ones that don't quite need a man to support them. Self-sufficient. Probably because to be otherwise would rub against the grain for me.

TSR: You’re a lawyer. How has that influenced your writing?

Jillian: I think part of it is like I said above. My heroines must be self-sufficient. I also think being a lawyer has helped me with grammar and just basic writing skills. The hardest thing for me is using contractions in my stories. As a lawyer, I have to write formally and it's hard to stop doing that and make the dialogue not be stilted when I write fiction. I usually go through my manuscripts 3-4 times and STILL find a need for contractions. I do the same thing with blog posts. In fact, all the contractions you see here were edited in after I wrote this. LOL!

I also believe that being a lawyer has exposed me to a lot of fact patterns that play well into my story lines. That old saw about truth being stranger than fiction is soooo true. I write what I like to call "Romantic Adventure with an International Flair" and I use my knowledge of criminal law, criminals, firearms, etc, as well as my love for travel in these romantic stories.

TSR: How did you spend your holidays? Any New Year’s resolutions?

Jillian: We had a quiet holiday this year. I have one son in college and one in high school. The oldest one came home on the15th and we've had a nice time with him being around. My parents live about 9 miles from us and we went over for Christmas Eve dinner as well as Christmas Day breakfast. The rest of the day was spent just reading and watching the kids play video games. It was nice. We used to do a run up to my in-laws (about 2 hours away) on Christmas Day and that made for a frantic time. My father-in-law was my husband's last living parent (out lived 3 wives) and he died two years ago. My husband's siblings don't gather together any longer. It's sad but makes for a more relaxed holiday for us.

No resolutions- about 15 years ago, I resolved to never make another New Year's resolution as they always petered out by February. So, by keeping that resolution, I guess I've made one??

TSR: I loved your blog entry about fire. I, too, love watching one burn whether it’s a summer bonfire on the beach or the one in my fireplace protecting me from three feet of snow outside. What does it take for you to light a fire?

Jillian: Thanks. I love the flames. Since I live in Florida, we don't get much weather that allows for a fire, but the least little drop in temperature and I'm there, lighting that fire in the fireplace! Wealso have a fire pit on our deck. We light it sometimes in the summer but not often as the humidity is so bad here. The heat from the fire makes for a meltingly bad time when the humidity is 100%. You know that old saying about Southern women don't sweat, they glow? It’s not true – we sweat like the dickens here!

TSR: What’s next for you?

Jillian: I have two books coming out in 2011. One is from SirenBookStrand Publishers and is called Surfer Bride. It is due to be released in April 2011. It's a contemporary romantic suspense. Here's a blurb for it:

Quincy Holt, a world champion surfer, was in love with a police officer, Fennimore Smith. He dumped her over a rumor that she cheated on him. Two years later, she’s moved on and is engaged to Percy Hicks, a British man that she believes could make her happy. Quincy thinks her fiancé is an antiques dealer but he’s actually a firearms smuggler. A smuggler being investigated by her former lover, now an ATF agent. When Percy’s private plane full of weapons is confiscated while Quincy is aboard and she’s arrested for arms dealing, Fennimore Smith flies to Bali to rescue her and get her to testify against Percy. She turns him down as she has plans of her own. She sets off to Londonon a quest to trap her fiancé and bring him down. Will she survive her mission? Will her former lover have to rescue her again?

The second book is due to be released in July 2011 by Desert Breeze Publishing. It's called Redemption for the Devil and is a historical set in 1920. It's also a romantic suspense. Here's a blurb for it:

A killing in Dublin changes the life of a Protestant teen. Lost after the senseless death of his childhood friend, he becomes a bomb expert for the Irish Republican Army. He boards the RMS Mauretania with plans to blow it up. Can a devout Irish Catholic woman help him to redeem his soul? Can she get past their religious differences and his past?

I have three other completed manuscripts that are in the pipeline and I hope to be able to announce where they will be published soon. I thank you again for allowing me to pop in, Michele. It's been fun. I want to give away a copy of Solo Honeymoon to one commenter here. All you have to do to be entered to win is tell me your ideal honeymoon destination.

Contest details: The contest will run until Jan 5th at 8pm EST. Please be sure to leave your email address with your post (members don't have to) so that Jillian can contact the winner. (Note: you must leave your comment on The Steam Room's website. Here's the address: http://www.michelezurlo.com/apps/blog/show/5708237-tsr-welcomes-jillian-chantal)

Scarlet Hyacinth Visits The Steam Room

Please welcome author Scarlet Hyacinth!

TSR: Tell us about your Kaldor Saga.

Scarlet: Enraptured was the first book I’ve ever written. The story is quite funny, actually. I started writing it while I was supposed to be working on my dissertation. My mother could never tell that I wasn’t writing anything remotely scholarly, given that she doesn’t speak English, so she couldn’t nag me that I was lazy. So, it was a lovely pastime, something I loved, and wanted to share with everyone else. Later I started posting it online as a free read, and it evolved into a much more complex storyline than I originally intended. Truth be told, I only ever intended it to be a trilogy, with three couples, all of which appear in Enraptured: Gabriel/Lucien(the main characters), Kalin/Cade and Orin/Zeli.

The Kaldor Saga now stretches over two worlds, including characters from both Earth, and its parallel world, Kaldor. While in Enraptured, the story revolves around a smaller cast, it gradually expands to include many more, as friends, family and mysterious enemies come to the fore.

In many ways, Over the Edge marks this twist, as the mood changes from the lighter, sweeter, more romantic one in Enraptured, toward a somewhat darker, deeper tone. I’m not sure whether it is because I am maturing as a writer, but in a way, I wanted to point out that happily ever afters are very hard to get. Something will always pop up that will mar it, even if it probably wouldn’t be something as drastic as what I used. You then have to rely on your loved ones, in this case Kalin and Cade, to fix what is broken.

My latest release, Destinies in Darkness, features a couple that wasn’t in the original story, Eric and Keenan. Part 1deals with the love story of this couple, while Part 2 reunites them, and the rest of the characters introduced in Part 1, with the Kaldorian side of the cast. As a matter of fact, Part 2 will come out tomorrow (Dec 28.) In this installment, the readers will find out the protagonists of the next story, Second Chances, which will be published next year, in spring.

TSR: What draws you to writing MM romances?

Scarlet: Well, there are two significant things that draw me to MM romance. The first one is that I find it with great potential from an emotional point of view. I also have a greater liberty with my heroes. For example, in an MF romance, I can’t make a heroine weepy or clinging on the male, as she would simply not appeal to the independent women who read the books. In MM, if the hero sheds a tear, he is simply in touch with his sensitive side. *grins

But seriously, I think that MM romance is much more challenging and with several aspects that an MF book would not have. For example, GLBT relationships are still looked down on in many countries, my own included. I hate that, and my writing is a sort of passive resistance to the general trend. Perhaps, in the future, I can do more for the GLBT community in my country.

And finally, I also write it for a very simple reason: it’s hot. What can be more delicious than two (or more) hunks getting it on?

TSR: You mentioned on your website that you don’t plan to ever write another ménage romance. Why not?

Scarlet: You saw that? Haha. That was true at the time when I posted it, but not so much now. From my point of view, ménage romance is very complex, simply because it involves an increase in emotion that is sometimes difficult to convey. But since then, I have changed my orientation and decided to take a chance.

As a matter of fact, four of the books on my coming soon list are ménage, the two sequels of my Deadly Mates Series (Spell of a Predator’s Moon and Dragon’s Bloodmoon), as well as two new books contracted with Silver Publishing: The Plot Bunny and Awakenings.

TSR: Would you ever consider writing straight or mixed (ménage with bisexual characters) romances?

Scarlet: I have many times considered writing other types of stories, including straight romances. As a matter of fact, I am considering venturing into mainstream fantasy sometime in the future. I am, first and foremost, a storyteller and I want to go beyond what I have already accomplished. But for now, MM romance is what I love to write, and I will stick to it.

TSR: You’re from Romania. How did you get into writing English-language novels?

Scarlet: English has always been a passion for me, ever since I first started going to school. In high school, I continued my studies of it and went on to take university classes in English. During this time, I read a lot, from Shakespeare plays, to philosophy, all in English. Then, a friend of mine introduced me to MM romance novels, and I was hooked. From then on, writing my own stories was only a step away. Of course, it took time for me to get good enough. Many wonderful people helped along the way, the great staff at Siren Bookstrand who gave me a chance and taught me how publishing is done. In many ways, I’m here now because of them.

TSR: I had a Romanian friend in college who used to roll his eyes at the mention of vampires. You list vampires as among your favorite things. What draws you to them?

Scarlet: I find vampires dark, interestingand romantic. Like your friend, I roll my eyes when I hear people mentioning the bloody ways of the Transylvanian “Count Dracula”. I read references of it in books, and it makes me laugh – which is why, even if Romania appears in my books, you’ll never find it as a “stronghold” for vampires. That aside, I have always been drawn to the darker side of romance, the bad boys, so to speak. And I can’t help but wonder what it would be like to live forever, but deprived of something we “humans” take for granted.

TSR: What’s next for you?

Scarlet: Many things. I will, of course, be continuing the series already in progress. Book 5 of Kaldor is on the waiting list, as well as the following books of Deadly Mates. I have also started a new ménage series, Guardians. The first book, The Plot Bunny, will be available in a few months, from Silver Publishing. I also tried my hand at a more taboo subject, that of twincest, in Awakenings. And of course, I have many, many ideas, all struggling to get out of my head.
