As we stand, enjoying the magnificent display of color, we clasp hands lovingly. I rest my head on Dhuroth's huge arm. Hope for a good future mixes with flashes of stomach-queasy uncertainty. I recall those times before in my life when everything became chaos and horror.
Sadness sits beside acceptance, and I speak from my soul. "It's always about beginning again, isn't it?"
"In this arrangement of timelines, so it is, my one. But I long for more stability, to build a permanent life that is treasured each and every day. Where happiness is more important than war."
Dhuroth's soul answers me.
"More important than war," I repeat. "Once upon an age of time ago, we had that, didn't we?"
"We did, my love." He strokes the hand I have placed on his chest over his heart. "Many of us work toward that day again."
"You know... this sounds kind of strange. But I'm remembering the scene in GONE WITH THE WIND where Scarlett O'Hara has been widowed... she's wearing black as was done in those times... and she's relegated to serving punch at the ball instead of dancing ... she's playing the part of grieving widow, but her feet are dancing to the tune behind the table... yeah, Scarlett had her human faults, alright... she wasn't in love with the man she stole from her sister... and yet, there's something to be said for being totally bored with war..." I pause, gathering my thoughts. "I mean, shouldn't we be dancing through life, having fun, enjoying and building good lives? Instead of having wars, and more wars...instead of destroying lives and land... and destroying all that's good in life?"
"All that's good in life," my lion man repeats. "You and I, we have always stood for such good. We have battled to preserve the goodness of life, all life... now..."
Rarely does Dhuroth leave his thoughts unfinished. "Now, "I say. "... now, we watch the destruction of good on Earth and Mars from afar."
"We must continue to create the good and honorable life here, where we are safe. We must battle on that front, battle for Mars and Earth, when we are able to affect the outcome toward the Light."
"Yes," I say, clinging to his arm. "We will build a wonderful and honorable life here. And as we can, we will help the people of Earth and Mars... we will save the animals and plants."
"I have already built the genetic-light banks. I plan on collecting as many genes as possible, for as long as possible... the library that is Earth must be salvaged."
"Salvaged," I murmur. "Yes, we must do all that we can to save the flora and fauna of Earth and Mars."
