Gypsy Reef is being stalked by a she devil they are calling... WEREWOLF!

Fallen Angel Review (5 Angels):

"...whirlwind ride..."
"...dazzling read..."

"Sugar and Spice is a whirlwind ride that not only sends spine-tingling chills down your back, but adds some devils, angels, and wicked demons into the plot that makes the war between good and evil explosive. Jennifer and Judas exhibit different layers of emotions that shift in a way that grabs the reader. Audrey Godwin canvases a tale that lends such detailed descriptions, that it leaves this reader with much imaginary. Often I looked over my shoulder to make sure no one was standing there, because her expressions are so vivid with the characters and all she creates. I loved her description of Judas down to his blonde hair. The intensity of the fear among the characters could not only be scene{sic} through their expressions but this reader could almost feel their sensations in this dazzling read." - 5 Angels, Linda L., Fallen Angels Reviews

Reviews:

Mystery, Romance...Frankenstein!! "Ms. Godwin delivers the goods. This book is set apart as it is a modern day Frankenstein story, with the romance and mystery thrown all together to emerge this wonderful, captivating story about two people who sincerely need each other and find their way to their hearts desire. This reviewer gives kudos to Ms. Godwin for a wonderful well-written story that takes the reader on a ride that is at times funny, tender and romantic." - Dawn, Love Romances

Dark & Erotic Twist!! "Audrey Godwin's SHADOW LOVER is a beauty and the beast story with a dark and erotic twist. It is sensual and emotional, sending tingles and tugging on the heartstrings in turns. An enjoyable read, and an interesting step aside from the typical direction of the genre." - Daria, Romance Junkies

Comes to Life Before Your Eyes! "This is truly an emotional story filled with pain, conflict, and good versus evil. If "Beauty and the Beast" made your heart beat faster, this one will really appeal to you. It is well-written, flows easily, and brings the characters to life before your eyes. It is a bit lengthy at 265 pages but the storyline makes the read worth the extra time." - 4 Hearts, Christina Kay, The Romance Studio

Wednesday's Words for May 27, 2009

I have a new filing cabinet! I’ve needed one for a long time. About six months ago, my beloved came home from work and said, “They’re re-modeling up at the office at work and got some filing cabinets in from another site. There might be one or two left over. Do you want one?”

Of course, I said yes. He told me they weren’t “normal” cabinets. After some pointed questions on my part, I determined that the cabinets in question were lateral cabinets—just the sort I was looking for.

A lateral cabinet would allow me to have one shelf devoted to my own books. Yes, that sounds kind of arrogant, but every once in a while I need to look over and see that handful of books by Morgan Ashbury.

The cabinet arrived Saturday while I was in Toronto attending a social event with the published members of my RWA group. As soon as I got home that afternoon I knew my beloved was napping—the house was silent. I stepped into my office and beheld my new cabinet.

It’s narrow enough to fit into the space I intended it for, where it would replace a dilapidated book case, but it is somewhat taller than I’d expected—it’s just shy of seven feet tall.

The cabinet was also, of course, covered with limestone dust, thanks to having languished for several months in a storage trailer at the quarry.

My husband got out of bed as I was looking at this leviathan of logistical support. “I don’t know how the hell you’re going to manage that top shelf,” he says.
I reminded him that we have a step stool—it permanently resides under the cat window for the convenience of the feline, but can be moved and utilized for brief periods of time by humans when necessary.

Sunday I was up bright and early, ready to get my office whipped into shape. That old book case held a lot more books than I remembered and there were dust elephants (mine are too large to be mere bunnies) everywhere.

“Finding some things you’d forgotten you owned?” my beloved asked at one point. He has quite the sense of humor sometimes. But in this instance, he was right. I’d forgotten that I owned so many motivational books. Most of them were holdovers from our brief stint in “network marketing”. We never did make much money in that venture, but we learned a lot about how to handle our finances, listened to a lot of great speakers and came to own a number of really good books, so the experience had been worthwhile.

I had other treasures tucked away on those shelves, too, like the paper target I’d saved from my trip down to Pennsylvania year before last. Of course, the target—a police issue, in the shape of a man—is covered with bullet holes, and not all concentrated where you might think. I’m not very good with a gun, but I did appreciate the shooting lessons. All in the name of research, of course.

Once I’d sorted, cleaned, and then moved out the old bookcase, my beloved managed to wiggle the cabinet into place, and I began to fill the new shelves.
My daughter came over to see what I thought of my new cabinet. She spotted the stool and said, “I wondered how you were going to manage that top shelf.”

My family takes great delight in pointing out that I am shorter than anyone else over the age of 10. They enjoy teasing me so much that I began to suspect a conspiracy when my son-in-law came over the next day, took one look at the beige giant and asked the inevitable question.

Only one person seemed to miss the opportunity to point out my short comings. When I described the new piece of office furniture and explained the work I’d done to update my office to one of my writing buddies, he never mentioned the over-my-head top shelf.

He only expressed hope I hadn’t, with my cleaning and modernizing, frightened off the ‘inspiration elves’.

Only someone who knows me well would think my suddenly surrounding myself with orderliness could frighten away my muses.
I guess I’ll just have to wait and see if I did.

Love,
Morgan

Jasmine's Urban Cowboy by Laura Ashton - Book Review

Book Review:

Jasmine is finally free. She is free to start over and do what ever she wants now that a huge weight is lifted off of her. Now all Jaz wants to do is get drunk and have the night of her life. Too bad her friend Brenda has other plans for her. Or maybe it could be the best time of her life. Especially after meeting two of the sexiest men alive.

What’s a girl to do when she’s faced with a hard choice. Is it really a hard one?

Ted and Gabe thought it would be just another night of bowling. But they sure are bowled over when they meet one sexy lady named Jaz. They both like Jasmine and are having a very hard time keeping their hands and mouths off of her. Things get even hotter between the trio. And what a way to end the night.

Jasmine is straight forward woman. Yet she’s never met such sweet and sexy men like Ted and Gabe. It’s such a hard decision for Jaz to pick one man so she decides to not see them anymore instead breaking anyone’s heart.
Jaz decides to focus on her new job. Too bad she didn’t count on her men to fight sneaky to win Jasmine over.

Ted and Gabe have a tough road ahead of them. One of them is going to get their heartbroken yet they’ll realize that Jasmine is worth the risk.

Laura Ashton is new and upcoming bestselling author. Ms. Ashton will win over many readers with her upcoming new series, Sensual Awakenings. With the first title in that series, Jasmine’s Urban Cowboys is off to an amazing start. You can be sure that its just going to be even more sexy in the upcoming titles in the Sensual Awakenings series..

I have to say that Jasmine’s Urban Cowboys is one hell of sexy ménage ride involving Ted, Jaz and Gabe. Ms Ashton lead characters have lots of sexy fun in the beginning then slowly manages to seduce not only the heroine, Jaz but readers too will fall in love with this novel as well.

Usually, there’s drama before the fun and sexy scenes come to life but Ms.. Ashton comes up with a new way to draw in the readers. Sure, we all like to read sexy love scenes yet there’s a hell of lot more drama behind the scenes as well that keep everyone entertained.

One of those dramas are Jaz’s best friend, Brenda who’s life right now isn’t going the way she’s hoped for. I for one hope that Ms. Ashton is going to give Brenda a chance to shine in her book soon?

Another memorable character is Ted’s mother, Camilla.. She is one of kind sweetheart who's very open to new things and isn’t easily offended by people’s choices and lifestyles. Seeing her son and nephew fight for what they want makes Camilla wants the same and go out to get what she's hoping to find her own happy ending.

Back to the main characters, I am amazed and definitely charmed by these three main characters. Ted and Gabe are so sweet and sexy and were definitely brought up to respect a woman. These men sure didn’t give up on Jasmine and kept on slowly seducing her over to their bed… Oops. I mean their side.

All that is left to say about Jasmine’s Urban Cowboys is that you won’t forget anytime soon. They only other thing I can say about this book is that this is one sexy true love story that is just the beginning of great series called Sensual Awakenings.

My vote… Say yes to Ms. Ashton’s Jasmine’s Urban Cowboys.

I am happy to give Jasmine’s Urban Cowboys a rating of 4 ½ Stars.

Angelic Forecast ~ XXXVIII

Shimmeria, my unicorn, carries me into a cloud realm. Her hoofbeats do not sound on the cotton puff clouds, yet there is a vibration as she gallops across the white glistening landscape. Her golden horn emits a stream of the tiniest golden stars. I thrill with the sensations of being astride her silky back. A wind flavored with sweetness rushes over me, the loveliest and fiercest of caresses. Where we go, I do not know. Why we go, I do not know. I only know the unfettered dream-like joy of being here. Where everything is looks sculpted of whipped cream, mashed potatoes or marshmallow. I have not even asked Shimmeria why. Maybe, it does not matter why, only that Iam. Slowing her stride, Shimmeria shifts to her haunches, then springs upwards. It feels as if we fly through a windless sky. Instead we sail toward another bank of clouds, tinted in shades of pink and lavender and blue. Landing gently, Shimmeria trots forward, her hooves like delightful springs. The Heavenly One wings to greet us, his ebony wings pulsing with rainbow colors.
“Heaven?” I ask.
“One of many. Welcome to the realm of Seeing.”

Wednesday's Words for May 20, 2009

This past weekend I ventured forth into a world that was strange and foreign to me. Saturday evening my beloved and I went to see a movie.

This isn’t an activity that I engage in often. Actually that’s a bit of an understatement. It took me some time to recall the last movie I went to a theatre to see. But I eventually did remember. It was the first James Bond movie with Pierce Brosnan in the starring role.

Yes, the last movie I went to see was Golden Eye, which debuted in 1995.
Fourteen years! Even I was surprised by that. I’d been thinking, five, maybe six years since I’d gone. To put this into a weird kind of perspective, I have a granddaughter who is ten, and I had never attended a movie theatre in her lifetime until this past Saturday.

The first thing I realized when I stepped into the Galaxy Cineplex was that this was indeed another world. Instead of a single ticket seller in a tiny booth, there was a counter, with a menu board (there are 8 theatres in the building). I almost expected the girl at the cash register us to ask “would you like fries with that?”

The Cineplex isn’t just a movie theatre—or a collection of theatres. It’s a complete entertainment center. There was an arcade, a restaurant, snack counter, seating areas and people everywhere. There was so much going on, and it was so unexpected, that I really couldn’t take it all in. Talk about culture shock.

I don’t know how many people each little room (theatre) can hold. Couldn’t be more than a hundred, could it? You have to understand my frame of reference. The movie theatres I went to when I was young (just shortly after the discovery of fire and only days before the invention of the wheel) were enormous venues – likely seating hundreds of people. They were in fact the concert halls of their day, complete with orchestra level and balcony. They were staffed with ushers! Of course, that kind of theatre wouldn’t be economically viable in this modern age. But they seemed to thrive back in the day.

I don’t know what it says about me, that I don’t watch movies very often. And it’s not just that I don’t go to the theatre—I don’t watch them on television, either. One would think that, being a writer, and writing as I do about people and relationships, I’d want to keep abreast of modern culture. Well I do—I think—I just don’t use movies to do so.

There just aren’t that many films that I want to go and see. I watch the trailers, and I really do have an open mind, but there just aren’t that many flicks that make me want to invest a couple of hours of my time. The truth is, I’m easily bored when it comes to the visual arts.

My beloved is a great movie fan. I doubt there’s a major motion picture (do they still call them that?) that he hasn’t seen. And, he’s assured me, he’s seen quite a few that weren’t major, too.

The movie we went to see Saturday night was the new Star Trek adventure. I thought it was really well done. Since I’ve sat in front of my TV to watch the original series, and every incarnation thereafter, I feel like I’m an aficionado on the subject. Not to give anything away, I thought the major plot twist brilliant—on every level.

If you haven’t seen this movie but have watched some of the trailers, you might already know that the casting choices were exceptional. Karl Urban was so good in the role of Dr. McCoy, I wondered for a moment if he was related to DeForest Kelley.

Even though I thoroughly enjoyed myself Saturday, I don’t anticipate returning to the Cineplex anytime soon. We were treated to some commercials and many trailers as we waited and waited and waited for the “feature presentation” and I didn’t see anything that would prompt me to spend an evening of my time to see it.

I understand the producers of this new Star Trek are planning a couple of sequels. It will likely be at least two years between releases.
I think I might make it out of my cave for those.

Love,
Morgan

5 Heart ~ Reviewer Top Pick for Turning Thirty-Twelve

Diana Coyle at Night Owl Romance just gave Turning Thirty-Twelve a "Reviewer Top Pick - 5 Heart" review! Thanks so much, Diana!

Jackie Delgado, a forty-something year old science teacher at Harrison High School, just doesn’t want another man in her life again. The only good that came out of her marriage to David is that they have two sons, Patrick and Nate. After a bitter end to her twenty-one years of marriage, Jackie wants nothing to do with having another relationship with a man. She is content raising her boys and between the boys, work and her friends, she is quite happy at the moment. But as her youngest finally goes off to college like his big brother did, Jackie starts suffering from a bad case of empty nest syndrome. The only comfort and companionship she now has in the house with her is Jellybean, her TV theme show singing cockatiel.

Her girlfriends, who are also teachers at the high school, are always trying to set her up even though she says she’s not interested. Finally, Abby convinces her that there’s this one guy that she thinks Jackie might actually like. Reluctantly, Jackie tells her girlfriend to give him her number. When he calls her to ask her out, she’s in for the biggest surprise of her life.

Who does the blind date turn out to be? What does she think of this guy overall? Does this turn out to be a match made in heaven for the both of them?

Ms. James did a fabulous job creating this storyline and she developed characters that you just can’t help but fall in love with, quirks and all. I found this story to be a little bit sweet with a whole lot of hot and sexy mixed throughout. I loved Ms. James’ sense of humor that she sprinkled throughout the pages and I found myself laughing out loud numerous times as I was reading. I would highly recommend this story to others and it’s a definite keeper in my library. Don’t pass this one up!

Five Star Review for Murphy's Law

Murphy's Law received a fantastic review from Val at Manic Readers! 5 Stars and highlighted as a "Featured Review." Just thought I'd share!

MR Review Murphy's Law by Sandy James

Seth Remington is known for his extravagant, irresponsible ways as well as wrecking car after car. His father is at a loss to find a way to help Seth grow up, that is until he dies and his will is read. In order for Seth to be able to have access to his inheritance, he has to work for Katie as a groom for one season. They are to have no contact and she is the one who will decide if he gets his money or not. In return, Katie gets a stakes horse. Can Seth Remington really do a normal person's job with a meager paycheck? Can Seth stop his playboy ways and have a relationship with Katie without any physical contact? Let the fun begin!

Katie's character was enchanting and extremely likable. She instantly made it into my heart from the moment I met her. She is strong on the outside but on the inside holds a lot of pain from past broken relationships. She is so patient and kind to everyone she meets. There is no way not to love Seth's character. He is a man who has no idea what life is all about. He has never done anything to earn his place in life and, God love him, he is about to get a rude awakening. I was so entertained when he got a taste of the real world. The predicaments he got himself into made me laugh. He found something that was his in life and that too touched my heart. The differences in Seth before he met Katie and after were striking.

Katie and Seth together were electric. You could just feel the sparks flying off the page. Sam, Brian, Chris, Ross and even Rachel (whose character I loved to hate) made this Murphy's Law just that much more entertaining. The plot line was magnificent and I gained knowledge of how a real race track works. I was able to see the horses’ personalities through Seth and Katie and I actually walked away wanting to ride a horse and know more about them. I always hope that books have epilogues so that I can see how the main characters are doing a little bit into the future. This epilogue was explosive!

Ms. James has outdone herself on Murphy's Law. It truly is one of the best developed and engaging books I have ever read. With action, rejection, animosity, suspense and a stimulating love relationship, Murphy's Law is certain to grip your emotions and do flip flops with your heart. I highly recommend Murphy's Law; it is a well crafted page turner. Ms. James is an extremely talented writer that I will continue to follow in the future.

5 Star Review for Buckskins and Brocade from JERR

I just received the Just Erotic Romance Reviews newsletter (#150) and much to my delight Buckskins and Brocade has received 5 Stars!

Reviewer: Stefani Clayton
Rating: 5 Stars
Heat level: O

Growing up in a household with two fathers, a very strong willed mother, an uncle only a few years older than herself and two siblings, Olivia Raines is ready to step out on her own. When she receives a letter from her uncle suggesting she take an assignment for the government, Olivia jumps on the nearest train, only to discover that the man who caught her peeking through his window is the same man who will be working this government assignment. Not only is he a walking temptation but he comes with his brother, his identical twin brother, and Olivia knows she has her hands full. All this before she learns that children are disappearing and the last agent turned up dead. Olivia has a lot on her plate with this first mission, but she is more than woman enough to handle it all. The question is whether the world is ready for Olivia Raines?

Buckskins and Brocade is the sequel to Kentucky Woman and is just as entertaining. I had the pleasure of reading the first story, and couldn’t wait to get into this book. Olivia Raines is her mother’s daughter. She is feisty, independent, and so unique I couldn’t help loving her character. Connor and Desmond are home-on-the-range sexy with just a hint of shadows to keep you drooling. The men fight like cats and dogs, which is just what I would expect from twins who spend all their time together. I just liked them, Connor with his seriousness, and Desmond’s constant laugh. There were numerous secondary characters throughout this story and they all played valuable roles in keeping it real. Sexually, these three start out hot and each scene turned up the heat until the final scene, which left me panting! This story didn’t bombard me with sexual scenes just for the sake of sex, and I honestly appreciate that. Buckskins and Brocade is a great read all the way around.

Thank you, Stefani and JERR!

Angelic Forecast ~ XXXVII

“Go ahead.” The Heavenly One nudges me gently, then winks. “Share your Hawk Spirit ~ from The Never-Ending Story.”
“Sure?” I ask. Why I don’t know. Wouldn’t the Cherub know?
“Yes. It is not merely one more part to the evolving story, it is symbolic for what is occurring now.”
“Will people ‘get’ the symbolism?”
“Everyone will receive the message best for them at this moment in time,” he assures me. Tenderly his fingertip strokes my cheek as his eyes blaze with a fierce sweetness that utterly reassures me.

Hawk Spirit ~

Kallyn roved her gaze over the magnificent, yet rustic lodge, surrounded by slim giant pine trees and a sparse forest of Spring-leafed out trees. Catching sight of two black bears, she murmured, “Wow,” and leaned forward, watching them lumber swiftly into the depths of the forest.

Somewhere water rushed and gurgled. Maybe a stream behind the lodge. Kallyn decided it must be mid-morning because of the bright blue sky and how the slanting beams of sunlight struck the trees.

Feeling obstinate she said nothing as they closed in on the lodge. Diamonds, spy this, covert that... and James Bond. She grimaced keeping her face turned away from Sergei. Yeah, her life was a spin of turmoil within a cyclone. What stuck in her craw at the moment... so many men and so little time to have a decent romance.

Just to be more obstinate and not because Sergei was that terrifically appealing, she asked, “Are you any good in bed?”

The question must have short-circuited his brain because he said nothing. Still, Kallyn witnessed his knuckles turn white as he gripped the steering wheel, his arm stiff as the proverbial board. He slowed and turned onto the road leading up to the lodge.

“I asked you a question,” she languidly slid in the knife of her voice. Not really caring if he answered or not... she was damn fed up to the gills with everything... Kallyn watched the chipmunks skitter about collecting goodies to eat.

“You don’t remember...” he began, his voice low, hesitant. “You shouldn’t remember, actually.”

“I don’t remember a damn thing,” she crossly burst out. “Oh, yeah, I remember being a dragon... but I certainly don’t remember how good you are in bed or not.”

“We were married at the time...”

“We were not,” Kallyn pounced with her tone. “I am so tired of all the lies. And if you say that we were again, or anything I don’t like, I promise you will regret it.” Scowling, Kallyn searched the wide sky above and saw three hawks circling above a clearing. For a brief day-dreamy instant she wondered if she could shape-shift into a hawk.

Instead, her mind floated toward the sky and suddenly she was soaring with the hawks, feeling what they felt... the wind combing over their feathers, the sunlight warming their backs... their hunger as they searched for breakfast. And something else... ~ I am Hawk, your Animal Spirit... rise above those who would use you for their own gain and not yours. Think of me often and I will guide you, my dragon friend. ~

‘Dragon friend?’ she asked telepathically.

‘That is why they want you on their side. They want to use your ability to become a dragon. A dragon’s fiery breath transforms diamonds into powerful magical tools.’

Kallyn shuddered inside, good and bad. To her core she felt Hawk’s words as true. But how did she escape their clutches?

God how she wished she felt her flaming force come alive. She’d transform and burn no-good-in-bed Sergei to a crisp... how did she know he was no good?

Aunt Dora’s complaint about his lack of prowess suddenly lived in her memory again. Sergei had been at their hide-away Yellowstone cabin for a small time.

He had led her astray and lied about everything...

“No, I haven’t, Kallyn.” His words broke into her thoughts. Was he reading her mind?
~~~~~~
For the forthcoming week enjoy Nature however and whenever you can. The Sun is bringing a newness to your soul and spirit. The Earth sings with the thought of you and supremely loves you whenever you help Her grow her wondrous plants. The very heavens themselves are sending streams of diamond light to bring you a brand new awareness of Life, and its potential for you and for all of humanity. All of this counters the spread of darkness. For this has become a dark age. One overcome by the sheer willingness to overcome.
5 Cherries for Buckskins and Brocade
Hi, everyone! I wanted to share my first review for Buckskins and Brocade with you. The book received 5 Cherries from Whipped Cream Reviews.
Buckskins And Brocade by Amber Carlton
Rating: 5 Cherries
In this fantastic sequel to Kentucky Woman, a young woman discovers a passionate relationship with the twin bodyguards assigned to protect her.Having been raised in an unconventional, but protective family with two fathers and one mother, Olivia Raines is determined to prove herself and becomes a spy for the First Lady.
Assigned to investigate the disappearance of some boys from the Orphan Train by going undercover as a schoolmarm, Livvie is not prepared for what's to come. She is definitely not prepared for the handsome twins assigned to protect her, Connor and Desmond McBride, but she cannot deny her attraction to the men and soon she doesn't have to.
This was such a wonderful and absorbing story that I didn't want to put down. I especially loved the characters of the story. Livvie really surprised me as despite her confidence and background, there is a naivety and innocence about her. At times she displays a vulnerability which really is quite touching. However, she is a little spitfire and is constantly surprising the brothers with her honesty and daring. I found myself just as taken with Livvie's infectious personality and couldn't help by smile at the things she says and does.
As for the brothers, they made great heroes and were perfect for Livvie. Haunted by a horrific past, Connor and Des have their own reasons for getting involved with the mission to save the boys from the Orphan Train. Life definitely hasn't been easy for the brothers, but with Livvie both of them begin to feel a bit of peace and happiness. However, they didn't grow up in a family like Livvie's and feelings of jealousy crop up as they fear that Livvie could never love them both, something I could understand and which really added to the realness of the story and the relationship.
However, Livvie is just what the brothers needed and I really enjoyed watching their relationship progress.As for the missing orphans plot, I thought it was quite interesting and I couldn't wait to see what would happen next with the investigation. Each new character and revelation added to the story and kept my interest. I really enjoyed how things played out, however, I did feel that the ending was a bit too quick for my tastes. I would have loved to learn and to have seen a bit more regarding the bad guys at the end. I also would have enjoyed another glimpse at Cutter, Billy, and Jessie (Livvie's parents and the characters from Kentucky Woman).
Despite this, I loved this story a great deal. With fabulous characters and a fascinating plot, this is one I was glad to have read.
Wednesday's Words for May 13, 2009
This coming weekend is the Victoria Day long weekend here in Canada. Yes, we Canadians still celebrate the “official birthday” of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria (who was Queen of England and Canada from 1837 until her death in 1901). The actual holiday is Monday, May 18th this year as it is always the closest Monday before May 24th.
When I was a kid, this was the only day of the year we had fireworks (we called it “firecracker day”). To my recollection, we didn’t begin to have fireworks on July 1st (Canada Day) until after I was a wife and mother. In those days the nation’s birthday was called Dominion Day—as in, The Dominion of Canada.
In my teen years, people began to refer to the Victoria Day weekend as the “May Two Four” weekend—not as a uniquely Canadian way of citing the date, the twenty-fourth, but because “two four” was the slang for a full case of beer, which in this country is twenty-four bottles!
This holiday plays an important role as the source of some of my most vivid memories of my father, who died when I was eight. Among my earliest recollections is being huddled close to my mom and sister as we stood on the front lawn while my father and brother set off the annual display. In those days, in our area, large community events were as yet unheard of. Generally, each family just had their own celebration. I even remember one occasion that must have been colder than usual because Daddy bundled us into the car to keep us warm while we watched.
Firecrackers were legal in those days, and there was always a bit of money to buy some from our corner store. I recall my first attempt at lighting my own resulted in my throwing away the “punk” and retaining the firecracker, which my father slapped out of my hand just before it exploded. I soon became proficient at setting off these mini explosives, and inventive as well. I used soup cans, soda bottles and mud pies as staging props for my exercises in demolition. It’s a wonder I didn’t seriously harm myself.
After my father passed away, and when I was an adolescent, the near-by city of Hamilton held an annual enormous fireworks display at the football stadium, and my mother would take me to that. This event was more than fireworks, there was a show with singers, dancers and sometimes even marching bands. There was often some sort of military aircraft fly-over, and once there were skydivers! The show was called “Bang-O-Rama”, and the fireworks portion of the program certainly helped the event live up to its name.
When our own family was young, my beloved and I always took our children to the local display. Bang-O-Rama had been retired into the history books, having given way to smaller, community-based celebrations. The event nearest us was usually held in a large park and had plenty of games and amusements for the entire family as the little ones waited anxiously for dusk.
Sometimes I miss those days, even though we inevitably froze our toes off. I know that I mostly miss my kids’ excitement and the wonder on their faces as the sky would light up with color and sound.
Beginning this Friday there will be some folks in my neighbourhood who will randomly, throughout all four nights, be setting off roman candles and fountains, barrages and wheels, and multi-shot explosives with bangs and whistles. They do it every year, and sometimes we do peek out to have a look at them.
I also know my beloved’s dog—a lab/border collie cross—will try to stuff his overweight, under-exercised self into the tiny opening beneath my desk—or he’ll try to crawl up into my chair to sit on my lap or even attempt to get up on the bed as the “popping sounds” made by the fireworks become audible during the evening. Fireworks terrify the poor dog.
My beloved and I will probably buy enough sparklers for the grandchildren to take to the park, just as our children’s grandparents did for them. And like those earlier grandparents—my in-laws—David and I will sit quietly at home, warm and comfortable, recalling the displays of years gone by, content to simply remember.
Love,
Morgan
I'm thrilled with this 4.5 Red Roses review for my historical romance, BRONZE LIGHTNING! Here's what Linda Sole says: (Thank you, Linda!)
"Bronze Lightning by Lindsay Townsend
ISBN: 1-60601-273-8
Pages: 356
Krete, c 1562 BC
Isle of Stones – Kingdom of the Atterians, 1561 BC
Sarmatia is the Bull Rider in the sacred rites. It is her place to help the children go through the rite so that they may become adults. She has always been content with her life but that is about to change with a chance meeting, a meeting that will end up transforming her view of life.
Fearn has always been a healer. It is his ability to heal that has made his name know far and wide. He has come to Krete to heal the king. Traveling to Krete has given Fearn the chance to meet Sarmatia, which has changed his life.
Fearn has found the one woman that he wants to spend his life with. Before he can do that he needs to make sure his people have a healer when he is gone. He goes home with the promise to Sarmatia that he will return for her and that they will be together. Once home he finds opposition to his leaving his family and the people. As he is about to leave having trained a new healer the unthinkable happens and the king dies. Now being part of the royal family Fearn must be tested along with others to see who will be the new king. Wanting no part of ruling the people Fearn nonetheless takes the test to show his good will. The one thing Fearn never saw coming was inheriting the crown. Now the only chance he has at happiness is if Sarmatia is willing to come to him on a several months long journey and giving up the life she has always known.
How strong is Sarmatia? She is about to find out just what she is capable of. She is about to start on a journey that will test her in its own way. One that if she is not careful she just might not survive. Sarmatia is going to find out just how much she loves Fearn as she is tested time and again.
Thinking that once she is reunited with Fearn that all will be well. Now they are going to be able to start their lives together she finds that she is very much mistaken. Some one is trying to hurt them and if they don’t find out who is behind the attacks they just might not be able to have a life together after all. Someone wants what they have and will stop at nothing until they get what they want. There are several people with a motive but which one is conniving enough to get away with the stealthy attacks without being seen. They will have to survive long enough to find the person or persons so that they will finally have the happiness they have tried so hard to enjoy.
This is a remarkable book in that it takes you back in time. It is well written so that you get a glimpse of the world at that time and it gives you a wonderful mystery as to who is behind the attacks and keeps you guessing as to what will happen next. The many twists and turns keep you engrossed as you try to figure out who is behind all the mishaps that keep happening.
I give this one 4-1/2 Red Roses."
Angelic Forecast ~ XXXVI
“Nine and nine. Today is a NINE day. This 36th angelic forecast breaks down to a NINE in numerology,” I say to myself.
Synchronicity strikes again and I wonder at the cosmic harmony creating our world right now, and, at the same time, the harmonies being created by our response as the people of this world. “Round and round the universe we go,” I sing softly. “Where we stop I don’t know. I do know number Nine is considered to be the number of completion. Completing anything?” I ask the Heavenly One as he floats down before me, his majestic ebony wings flapping slowly. I stare. It’s like watching a fantasy come to life and I feel wondrous inside.
“Yes, in every blessed moment.” His purply shining eyes tease me. “There are several world events which will come to a head this week and early next week. Few people will notice because there will be few news reports.”
“Let me guess,” I drily begin, “the consequences will show up sooner rather than later and people will wonder how did that come about?”
He nods, his gaze serious and piercing. “Do you remember Tonto, the Lone Ranger’s companion?”
I smile. “Of course.” A moment later it hits me like a hammer to the head. “Oh. White man speak with forked tongue. That’s what Tonto would say.”
The Cherub nods, an imitation of the stoic proud Tonto. “Men and women on the world stage will speak with forked tongue this week.”
“Haven’t they always?” I ask, feeling my brow raise. And my ire.
“True. Now, it will occur at a level never before known in this current age.”
“The endtimes,” I barely murmur. “Completion. The end of our current age.”
“The endtimes,” he repeats. “And the beginning times.” Straightening his arm, he suddenly plucks something out of the air. The blackest snake I’ve ever seen. It twines it’s whip-like body around the Heavenly One’s arm. Lifting its sleek head the snake gazes at me and flicks its forked tongue.
“A friend?” I ask. The snake does not act in a threatening manner.
“A gift. A harbinger of what is to come.”
“A harbinger?” I cock my head, puzzled.
The snake unwinds, slithering onto the ground. I watch it disappear into the thick grass and foliage.
“The time for deception ends. The truth about humanity begins.”
I nod because I understand.
The forthcoming week is one of pivotal changes in your life, especially. While it is good to complete projects this week in the best manner you can... actually, this week is about setbacks. Whatever setback you experience this week and into next week will be best served by changing the direction of your life, rather than by persevering toward what you have been denied. For example, if there is a particular product you desire that isn’t available, look for it elsewhere instead of waiting to purchase it. This week is about changing course. Don’t fight the headwinds. Find a new course in life.
Dr. Laurie Miller may have been born into money, but she has dedicated her life to counseling and helping the less fortunate. She promised her parents that she would take over her parents’ charitable foundation when she turned thirty, but the last thing she wants to do is give up the free clinic and the patients who need her so much. Her gift of sensing other people’s feelings has made it difficult for her to get close to anyone, but when she meets Ross Kennedy, she knows that they are meant to be together. Because Laurie can’t read Ross, and there is a saying in her mother’s family: “Wed the one who cannot be read.”
Ross is an attorney who puts in hundred-hour work weeks. Having come from a poverty-stricken background, he is driven to succeed beyond all else. His chance meeting of Laurie during a Montana snowstorm changes his life, because he has never met a woman who affects him as deeply and immediately has she does. Knowing that Ross has nothing but disdain for people who inherit their wealth, Laurie doesn’t tell him about her moneyed background. Unfortunately, this is a falsehood that will come back to haunt her.
As Laurie and Ross strive to overcome the obstacles that her money and dissemblance have placed between them, their lives are turned upside down. Laurie is being targeted by a stalker, and his threats are escalating at an alarming rate. He wants something from her – a diary from the days of Prohibition that he believes that it will lead him to a treasure cache lost for generations – and he’s willing to go to just about any length to get it from her. Ross and Laurie find that when faced with the attentions of a madman, the differences between them are perhaps not as important as they thought.
********
Heads up, romance lovers, because I’ve got a good one for you. If you enjoy a little something extra in your stories, Sandy James’s novel Free Falling may be just what you’re looking for. This novel combines romance, suspense, and just a dash of paranormal into a very readable and enjoyable package, and I think it will please the most discerning of readers. I certainly enjoyed it.
The romance portion of this story is very appealing. It mixes a little reverse snobbishness on the hero’s part with mistaken identity and falsehood to create romantic tension between the two main characters. Ms. James has injected this story with emotion and tenderness, but she hasn’t neglected the differences of opinion that couples – even couples as much in love as these two – all have.
A thread of mystery and suspense is woven throughout Free Falling. It is less evident in the first half of the story, which focuses mostly on the development of the interpersonal relationship between Ross and Laurie, but as the novel progresses, the tension grows. The diary entries at the beginning of each chapter are meant to pique the interest of the reader, but it is not until we are well into the story that we understand where they are headed. I’m going to admit that I found them a little puzzling at first, but as the characters themselves became involved in the mystery, I appreciated having the opportunity to discover the answers along with them.
One of the most outstanding attributes about Free Falling is its characters. Ms. James has developed a wonderful cast and has breathed enough life into them to make them almost jump off the page. Ross is very much an alpha male, but he is also obsessive-compulsive and a little bit snobbish. He has a lot of emotional baggage from his childhood, and it is up to Laurie to teach him how to relax, have a good time, and let the past go. Laurie is very insightful, especially regarding Ross’s hang-ups, but for all that she is a counselor, she has low self-esteem due to her size. Ross has to show her that the beauty she has within her radiates outward and makes her absolutely stunning.
But it is not just the primary characters that make this story. The secondary characters are equally appealing. They are well-rounded and developed fully enough to make them distinct and memorable, and they give the plot additional depth.
I found Free Falling to be a very pleasant surprise. It is the second novel in Ms. James’s Damaged Heroes series, but it is not necessary to read the first story to enjoy this one – it is completely self-contained. Of course, now that I’ve read Ross and Laurie’s story, I’m probably going to have to go back and read the previous novel. If it is anywhere near as well-written as Free Falling is, then I’m in for a very pleasurable experience.
Wednesday's Words for May 6, 2009
Growing older is an adventure.
There are both good things and not-so-good things to be experienced in this adventure. The negatives, of course, are likely obvious.
As you get older, you discover that the things you could accomplish with alacrity when you were, say, in your early to mid-twenties are either impossible now, or take a great deal of medicating—before and after. You can’t do as much physical labor or do it as quickly as you could back then. You tire more quickly, but sleep less soundly. Dancing till dawn is out of the question. So is just staying up until dawn. I don’t know about you, but most nights I want my bed by ten-thirty.
As you get older, you ache in places you either never knew you had, or had completely forgotten about. Joints don’t work as well and your center of balance isn’t what it used to be. One wrong move and you pull a muscle that hurts for days, if not weeks. My typical wrong move usually ends up with me on the ground, looking and feeling like a klutz. Thank God I come with padding. Otherwise the results could be very painful.
As I’ve gotten older, my tolerance for some things has diminished. Among those things are noise, crowds and bull pucky. I’ve often noted in these essays that I should have a t-shirt that reads “does not play well with others”; the older I get the more convinced I become that this motto should be blazoned not only on all of my clothes, but it should be stenciled on the side of my car, as well.
The sense of time slipping through your fingers isn’t something you experience when you’re young and vital. For me, at my age, it’s become background music.
There comes a point where you realize that there are likely things you will never accomplish. Maybe, as a result of this epiphany, you make your own “bucket list”. Or maybe you consider that some of those accomplishments you’re mourning were never really meant for you in the first place.
The good things about getting older may not seem like much at first glance. Peace is easier to achieve, perhaps because you’ve come to the point where you realize that it’s precious, and there isn’t really that much worthy of disturbing it.
Happiness is easier to achieve, too. After several decades of life you tend to be more comfortable in your skin and you understand that real contentment can be found in the small things.
Being older you’re more likely to look less outside yourself and more inside yourself for these elusive states of being.
You appreciate all aspects of life more as you get older—at least I do. I try not to miss too many beautiful sunsets, pretty flowers, or babies’ smiles. I take time to listen to people, and if I see a chance to give someone a hug, I do that, too.
It doesn’t seem all that long ago that my beloved and I began to date. His grandfather passed away in those first few months, and we were teenagers, attending the funeral, hands clasped tightly because, being young, the event was like an anathema to us. Now, we’re on the front lines, so to speak. And while we hopefully have decades left, we’ve learned that we can be comfortable, and comforted, by that most somber of human rituals.
When you’re young, you want to live forever. As you get older, you feel like you have. But more, you understand the cycles and the rhythms of life better. You appreciate each day, and consider each new candle on the birthday cake to be a singular achievement.
I’ve heard some people say that youth is squandered on the young, and that cliché holds merit. But I think the wisdom earned from years that have passed and a life that has been lived, if handed to the young, would truly be a waste.
Love,
Morgan
"You Gotta Read!" Review - Murphy's Law
Title: Murphy's LawAuthor: Sandy JamesPublisher: Siren-Bookstrand
Rating: You Gotta Read
Reviewed by: Val
Review:
Katie's character really spoke to my heart. She was an extremely likable person with a conscience and even when she was hurt, she would think about the best interest of the other person involved. In walks Seth Remington, with his huge ego and extravagant lifestyle. Katie calls things like they are which is a refreshing change for Seth. Seth's character was a man who was yet to find himself. I enjoyed watching the transformation between the man the book started off with and the man at the end of the book. It was a journey that was filled with laughs, tears and everything in between. Being attracted to Katie was not a part of the deal but what can you do when true love is involved. Seth and Katie together had my heart pounding and I was hanging onto every written word. Their relationship was electric. I love epilogues in the books I read and this has to be the best epilogue yet! It's full of surprises you didn't see coming.
Ms. James has written an outstanding piece of work that was packed with one thrill after another. The action scenes blew me away and the romance had such sexual tension, I was cheering for Katie and Seth the entire story long. I learned a lot about horse racing throughout the book which made it that much more fun. Murphy's Law is not a book you want to miss, trust me. It has all the elements of a superb novel that will tug at your heartstrings one minute and want to destroy someone the next. I highly recommend Murphy's Law and watch out for Ms. James, she is on her way to the top.
Angelic Forecast ~ XXXV
“I feel a huge change,” I say to the Heavenly One. He perches on the edge of a small puffy cloud, his countenance one of deep pondering. “A huge emergence of the Dark Side,” I continue. “And a huge rising up of the Light Side.” I wait for his response.
Irresistibly drawn, I poke a finger into the cloud.
“Taste,” he encourages, a sudden grin transforming his face.
I stare at my own finger, then slowly bring it to my lips and taste. “Mmmm... marshmallow and rose and honey.”
“Exactly what my Sedona said earlier. She reminded me to thank you for our latest scene together.”
“My distinct pleasure.” I smile, heady with the taste of his cloud. “I only wish I had more time to finish your next adventure together.”
“Time is of the essence.” His tone and his expression are enigmatic. “You are correct. The Dark Side and the Light Side emerge together at a quantum rate and are more susceptible to everyone’s thoughts, for and against.”
“For and against. How does that play out?”
“Every ‘no’ against the Dark Side defeats it. Just as every ‘yes’ for the Light Side increases it.”
“Then, no is as important as yes.”
“So, it’s always been. A secret of the Ages.” Leaning forward, the Cherub smiles, his legs dangling adorably.
I nod, feeling something ancient stir inside me. “The flu?”
“Contained for now. The Dark Side waits for another time to use it as a weapon.”
“Yes,” I murmur. “Wow, the cloud’s taste hasn’t lessened.”
“It will. But it will return every time you remember.”
I smile. It’s been a very long week.
For this week it remains important to prepare, as much as you can, so you are able to take care of yourself and all those you love for whatever arrives. This is also a week for merrily enjoying the month of May. Get outside whenever you are able and enjoy all that Nature offers you. If you garden, listen to the land and to the birds. Simply observe whatever is around you and whatever occurs around you. Some of you will receive messages while others will be uplifted in new ways and others will be energized in the ways they’ve experienced before.
Mother Nature invites you to love her and to feel her love for you.
